Hello,

My name is Craig and I am not only new to the forum but brand new to gardening. I have limited space in our back yard and have decided to grow a few vegetables in Smart Pots. I look forward to learning and hopefully contributing some of my success and failure. Thanks...

Hey Craig, Welcome to the forum. Check out the All New Square Foot gardening book (2006). You may be able to get more bang for your garden buck with a SFG than the pots.

Thank you for the warm welcome! I just found this website today and bought the Smart Pots earlier this week so I am going to have more of a hybrid garden. I am going to read Mel's book and execute some of his rules in my containers. I guess I will be conducting a nice little experiment... Hello! 53366

I'm new, too! This site really gets you excited about gardening the right way. I'm going to have to start small and if all goes well, my husband will let me expand next year!

Good luck!

Welcome Craig! Hello! 396615

I took a peek at the Smart Pots, very interesting. It's worth a try.

But you will find out how much easier it is to garden in a square foot garden!

Please read Mel's book and this forum will answer alot of questions.

Best of luck!

A lot of us have expanded our beds by using containers filled with Mel's Mix. So the best thing you can do is mix up a big batch. fill up your Smart Pots and grow. Remember, you only need 6 inches of MM for most things to grow, so you can use a cheap filler like sand, pebbles, even empty soda bottles to fill up the space and put MM on top. Fill them with MM for carrots and other deep root veggies and layer them up with MM for potatos.

The grids making the spacing easier is an important part of SFGardening, but the MM is the heart and soul. It's what makes the plants grow, so don't skimp.

Kay
