bamboo in compost? Empty bamboo in compost?

Post  curio 2/24/2012, 8:37 am

This is probably a no-brainer... but it's 5:30 a.m. after getting up at 4, and I haven't found my brain yet this morning... need more caffeine.
My husband and I dug up and then cut up a portion of a medium sized bamboo clump last weekend (it had encroached on the path to the compost bin to the point the wheelbarrow couldn't pass).
I am wondering if the leafy portions of the tops, with very narrow stems, could be used as green matter in the compost bin? I'm thinking that would work, and that the stems might work like other large stems to help aerate the mass.
Has anyone else used bamboo leaves and small stems in compost, and if so, did it work like I'm thinking it will?

When I dig up the invasive 'bamboo' I throw it on the burn pile;I don't trust it bamboo in compost? _suspect_. I would bet the foliage is fine to go in the compost.

I thind I'd chop/prepare for the compost, then put in a garbage bad to be sure it won't root. Bamboo is hard to control, as well you know. If it doesn't root in the bag then add to the compost. Jo

bamboo in compost? Empty no chance of rooting

Post  curio 2/24/2012, 9:15 am

We tossed the rootstock into the compost going to the city/county. This is pretty much just the tops, which don't root. I probably could use the hand pruners and clip all the small leaf fans from the main stem. Other than that I don't have a way to chop them (no power mower).
