In order to have a successful garden, you may find it helpful to use vegetable varieties that are shown to be adapted to your location and growing conditions. The following quote (from OSU) explains how varieties are chosen for the list, and the link provides a list of proven varieties for various regions of Oregon. The link includes descriptions of the four Regions in Oregon, and lets you know if a particular item is not suitable for your specific conditions.

OSU Extension Service wrote:

2011 OSU recommended vegetables provide best yields in local gardens

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Vegetable varieties and melons recommended by Oregon State University for 2011 are adapted to local growing conditions to produce the best yields in home gardens. The OSU Extension Service recommends the updated varieties listed here for all areas of the state except regions indicated.

"We look at these varieties at least two years before we can make recommendations," said Annie Chozinski, faculty research assistant with the horticulture department at OSU.

"Some we consider for many years, especially if they vary from year to year," she said. "We observe and measure many traits, but it's the overall score that helps us decide. If something has high scores in everything but succumbs to disease pressure, it is not recommended. Similarly, if something is highly disease resistant but has odd flavors, size or variability, we don't recommend it."

I'm afraid to click the link. What if all those fantastic sounding seeds that are already on their way are on the do not grow list? Shocked That would be so sad...

Noie, just because they are not on the OSU list does not mean they won't grow and produce for you. These are just proven to produce in our area.

I live on the Coast and have grown things they say are not suitable to grow at all in my area. I may not have had a huge beautiful crop, but I did get a couple of small eggplant (certainly worth more than the cost of the seeds)

I had a enough Kung Pao peppers (not on the list) to give some dried, as token gifts to some friends who love hot spicey Asian food.

Okay, this made me laugh out loud because it's EXACTLY what my second thought was. Laughing (Just sent my seed order in yesterday). No worries though - I may just have some more things I need to try!

My first thought was that we have a FANTASTIC Regional Host here in the Pacific Northwest! Thank you Furbalsmom for the timely link!

We do have a great regional host!

And don't be afraid to click the link. I finally did and there wasn't a no plant list. So it's safe to assume any seed on its way that isn't on the list just hasn't been tried yet. Right? Razz
