I know it's early, but I planted anyway

Although our average last frost date is around May 15th, I went ahead and started a few seeds indoors today. This is my first year doing seeds indoors, so I was antsy to get some going! I planted broccoli, parsley, and yellow onions. We have had a VERY mild winter, so I am hoping that spring will come early and the last frost date will too. This will force me to go get some lights this week to get my light stand set up. I've been seeing some great (and cheap) ideas on the forum for light stands, so I'm going to give it a try. Can't wait until I see my seeds sprouting! Is anybody else taking a gamble with early seed starting, or am I the only one?

Even allowing for an earlier start for me this year based on last year's calculations, and having clear plastic and coldframe and A-frame aids available, I won't be starting any of my earliest seeds til Feb 11th. That's a few weeks earlier than my usual starting dates and I realize I'm taking a chance, but I'm antsy, too. Mine is based on Zone 5a freezing dates.

edited to add: I based my dates on my 5a zone but see that I'm now in 5b so that may help me a little.

I need to update my profile. They have bumped me up to 7a, so I hope that will help me too! Even if these few seeds don't work out, I'm only out a few pennies. I will pot up if I need to - I've been saving 2 liter bottles, so I hope they will be big enough!

Good luck with your early start and I'm hoping it all works for you.

I use 2-litre bottles for my tomato transplants and they have lots of growing room so that size will help you a lot. That way you can put out your seedlings in sunlight on good days and bring them inside when its cold.

My red and white onions are up. I planted them in those little tofu containers.

spinach, kale, artichokes, as well as many perennial flowers, it is all just going to mean WAY more work but what the heck, I just love doing anything with seeds and seedlings GOOD ON YA

I started the broccoflour and cabbage. I used the premade mix at walmart by the peat-pot people (can't think of the company name), things sprouted in 2 days.

I have the room at 65, and grow lights are on 16 hrs a day.

I too planted early this year. I have starts of 3 different lettuces, parsley, chives, oregano, cinnamon basil, spinach, sunflowers, watermelon, garlic and cilantro. All is up and doing well. I transplanted today to larger pots and am keeping them in my heated sunroom. I am hoping this will work out. Just so excited to get out and play in the dirt! I am in Eastern WA. near Moses Lake. Any one else close by?
