Shade cages
I might be being particularly dense today (good chance of that actually), but I don't quite get how to make a shade cage. The cage part looks easy enough, but what do I use as shade cloth?

Re: Shade cages
Noie, some of our members use cheesecloth as it provides just a bit of shade, useful when transplanting. Mel also suggests temporarily setting up shingles on the South side of your planting to protect from harsh sun.
In areas where you have intense heat along with strong sunlight, you might need to use "shade cloth"
Here is just ONE example of SHADE CLOTH <<< Click Here. I am sure there are many available out there from various sources, including gardens shops and seed companies.

Re: Shade cages
Okay...it's actually something I go buy called shade cloth. I wonder if anything we have in Oregon counts as intense heat? I know it burns me...but maybe my plants will be tougher!

Re: Shade cages
You might want some shade if you have cool season crops like lettuces and broccoli and the temps get over 80 or 90, but being on the Coast, I never have that problem.
