Garden on the go is ready Empty Garden on the go is ready

Post  hayjude 6/6/2010, 6:44 pm

We finally found the different composts and mixed up MM yesterday after Dave finished building my 2'x7' traveling garden for the back of our 5th wheel. He also built a screened cover for the 2'x5' section that is attached to the bike rack off the rear hitch of the trailer. The 1'x2' boxes on the end have to be moveable to take off when we travel so the tail lights will show. I planted the seeds and tansplaned the tomatoes and peppers that I started in Texas in April We will leave northern Florida next Sunday and head up the East coast to Maine and then across to Minnesota(used to be home) by August so we can fly our 8 year old granddaughter back to Florida for school. I am excted about this new garden adventure and should have internet at least 1 a week so will try to keep you updated on the experiment. Keeping my fingers crossed for garden goodies along the trai. Oh I hope I am posting a picture, this is my first try. Happy trails & good gardening..Garden on the go is ready Img_4312

WOW!!! Very creative. Look forward to following the progress through the summer.

How are you planning on taming the tomatoes at 55mph?

Happy Travels & Gardening!!

Looks interesting. Just wondering if you have considered the drying out of the plants when you are driving. I think it will be great when you are stopped, not when you are moving. Plants get wind burnt if not protected.

I just hope you take the SFG off before you travel and place it inside when you take it with you.

We are hoping that the top and ends of the cover(made from shop light grids) will be enough to keep the wind off and still let enough air in to keep from cooking the plants and enough sunlight to let them grow. We will stop and check it often on the road and can cover the grids with plastic or tarps if necessary. This is all new, so will let you know after we take off next Sunday.

If anything.....I suggest plexiglass that will give minimum air flow. Or to at least diffuse the air currents at highway speeds.

How fun and smart! The PP's idea for plexiglass to protect from wind sounds smart too. Have a fun adventure!!

Peggy and others:

The reason that I said plexiglass is cause I bought plants and put them in the back of my pickup truck and the 10 mile ride home ruined/killed them. The wind for unprotected plants is rough. I wish them luck with the garden on the back of the trailer. I hope it works.

We will keep in mind the plexiglass but I was afraid the plants would cook in the hot sun & high temps when we leave, maybe we will try some of each. I sure would like to have the cover difuse the wind enough, we'll see. Thanks for all the encouragement.

It sure looks like it will be worth the try! I'm jealous. My motorhome is sitting in the driveway and my SFGs are firmly planted on the ground!!! With the exception of the 2x4 on wheels. Could I pull it on my hitch?

You Good Sammers would be a hit at the Gypsy Gathering in Elkhart late August. We could get together and give a program there!

What say you?

I am so pleased with the interest in my new try at SFG - garden on the go. I'm not sure we would be close to the Gypsy gathering but sure would show up if we could, met Nick & Terry at an Escapade when we first started full time Rving. Oh just a couple updates so far, 1. I am goint to attempt to put a picture here of the cage down over the plants for when we travel as it is now(We have plans if this doesn't work) and will check it frequently the first couple days out. I seem to have problems whenever I try to post pictures but maybe if I keep trying, I'll get it yet. 2. I cannot believe how fast seeds are sprouting down here in Florida, ts only been 3-4 days and I see radishes, lettuce and my new special small cucumbers coming up already and the transplants seem to be doing well. I love MM soil, it is so easy to watch conditions. Will keep you updated as we go. Chow for now.Garden on the go is ready Img_4314

I'd say the exhaust is up front on the truck that hauls the 5th wheel. Unless her trailer is a motor home.

Yup, you are righ, the truck is 30" ahead of the 5th wheel so exhaust should not be a problem.

HayJude, I think this is the best idea ever. We are RVrs with a 33 ft 5th wheel. We have settled for a while on the Oregon Coast, but intend to get back on the road sometime. I have started my first SFG and coastal conditions are quite a bit different from home. Best of Luck and please keep us updated about your On The Go Garden.

Welcome Furbalsmom! Welcome to the SFG Forums! Are we going to have to set up a separate Regional Forum for us gypsys or is that "we" gypsys?Garden on the go is ready 262465

There are a lot of folks on the forums from the Pacific North West. I hope you connect with some of them. This is a great Forum with lots of active contributors. Keep coming back!

I will also be following the success of Hayjude and maybe we'll all meet down the road someday!

Garden on the go is ready Empty It works good

Post  hayjude 6/15/2010, 8:30 pm

Hi all, We made our first travel day with no problems, brought in the two side boxes(because of the signal lights) and lowered the cover on the rest and the plants and checked often with no problems from the wind. Dave thinks that the garden is close enough to the back to be out of most of the downdaft. The carrots are now coming up and the peas are doing good. The radishes are growing nice and the tomatoes look ready to bloom. Tomorrow we go to Savannah,Ga so another travel day. Will let you know how things are going as we travel along. So far all is well. Sure hope youall are having as much fun as we are with this sfg. It gets lots of attention and so we have been promoting sfg to all in the campgrounds and stops that we make. More soon.

Are you growing tomatoes? If so what kind? Talk about fabulous creativeness. I never would have thought to do anything like that in a million years. I simply would have just said "we're RVing, so no garden." Talk about thinking "inside the above ground box."
