Hello to the thousands of Irish gardners on the forum (LOL), this is my first post and my first season using SFG'ing.

I would like to hear how Irish SFG's yeilds were this summer. I found growth slow especially on root crops (potatoes, carrots & parsnips) and other crops and other crops like onions, broccoli and cauliflower bolted (went to seed). I'm comparing yeilds to my old traditional row garden which did not have very good soil.

I followed the SFG instructions exactly, I'm an Engineer like Mel and get obsessed with instructions.

I am blaming the poor performance on the bad weather in Ireland this summer and will try to Mel's system for a couple of years at least.

One advantage that I did get from SFG is that I have managed 2 to 3 crops in every 1ft square, at the moment my winter greens (Kale, Leeks, Brussle sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower) are looking very good.

A lovely Irish summer for my 1st SFG 396615

Hi kmorrissey and welcome! I'm from Dublin, also... Dublin, Georgia, USA that is. Laughing It was named such because the local plantation owner's wife was Irish and was homesick. Supposedly, this made her not so homesick. Who knows? Laughing

Crappy weather is never helpful. But you are doing what Mel intended. using each square as its own little plot. Lovely. Las t year was cooler here - and way too cool in the Pacific NW but not this year. They are complaining of the heat and We have had multiple triple digit days here. And poor San Diego County is without power. Ouch. Anyway.

Welcome and enjoy the fruits (or vegetables ) of your labor.

We do have a few gardeners from your neck of the woods here and I'm sure they will pipe up and offer advice. You are wise not to judge from just one year's results. We are currently haveing one of the worst droughts on record.
