pulling onions?

I think my onions are ready to pull. Do I have to do anything with/to them before I start using them? like drying or anything like that. Thanks

You don't have to dry them to use them but you should dry the ones you will be storing long term.

I also wouldn't "pull" them literally. I would lift them out by sticking a trowel under them gently...

I'm not sure about storing them, but I did read the best way to dry them is pull them, and lay them on the square for a day or two (weather permitting) and then bring them in when the tops are completely dry. I seem to remember you can braid and hang them like garlic, but I'm not sure, I do know cool dry place, which is why I am researching building your own root/storm cellar. I dried some of ours (well the kids did) on the squares they came from, then brought them up to the porch in the sun to sit for 2-3 more days. They look pretty good now.

Since I have 32 squares of onion and garlic my plan is to get two pallets, lay chicken wire over them lay the garlic and onions on them outside in the sun and let them dry a few days. I have read you want to turn them a few times. Once they develop the papery dry outside then they can be stored on some kind of container that allows for air circulation. You can actually but onion bags from some of the seed companies, I will probably have Joe make me a wooden box with holes drilled in it.

Keep in mind this is my first year doing this so all of this is my "plan" we will see how it actually goes. LOL

I just gently pull them out and wash them (dog's extra nitrogen in liquid form). I cut the roots off and use them in the mulch ben. I have a dehydrator which I use to dry the some of the onions out. Ones I dehydrate are either put in sealameal bags and stored or I put them in a blender (We have a Magic Bullet) and pulverize them to beyond powder. These are stored in a jar for seasoning the pulled pork or whatever we want to barbeque.

From what I understand, onions will keep pretty well once clean and dry. Just keep them in a nice dry storage place. I am looking forward to picking mine too. They have not quite bulbed enough, but they are getting close.
