Re: Brussels Sprouts?
Spacing in an open row would be 18" so I would guess one per sq foot.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Re: Brussels Sprouts?
It's kind of hard to find on the SFG site, but it's there. 1 per square foot and plant on the north side of the box, they do get tall. http://www.squarefootgardening.org/qnastart#!__qnaplants/viewstack1=brussel-sp
Re: Brussels Sprouts?
Last year I planted mine every other square, one per square. I put lettuce in the between squares. BS Take up a lot of room above ground. Once they are well established they will also like a handful of dried blood sprinkled around their root area every few weeks.

Thanks, Chicago!!
Camprn, seriously? They still need that even in Mel's Mix?

Re: Brussels Sprouts?
Kerriejo, they should be just fine in MM. Many grow them in MM without adding anything, however some do suppliment, which is fine too.
I have brussels sprouts too, got them at Lowe's, unfortunately it is not recommended to grow them in our area in the spring-maybe someone should talk to the stores here and tell them not to make us drool over them until fall. Thing is, they can be grown 10 miles down the road from me in AR this time of year, go figure. So, I stuck them in the ground anyway, put them next to a trelis, and will suport them if they need it, they do get tall, and when you see them on the stalk remove the leaves below them. Let them grow, talk to them, tell them how pretty they are and let's you and I compare notes, and show them brussels sprouts can be grown in NE TX this time of year.

Re: Brussels Sprouts?
LOL, yes, I noticed after all my Googling and staying up sooo late last night discovering new gardening things, lol, that BS aren't a spring/summer crop. BUT they won't live in the little containers till Fall, so I'm pokin' 'em in the ground anyway!! I know there's a chance that will be a total disaster, but I will just blame it on this being my first year after all --- Ha!! I'll keep you posted on mine as we go... trying to get a blog together now with pics ... this it the weekend it's coming together...

Re: Brussels Sprouts?
Ya know, if I get one Brussels Sprout from them, it will be a success. According to my SFG app on my phone I have less than a month before harvest, so I have my fingers crossed. I am the only one here who eats them anyway so no big deal. I'm putting things out this weekend, and when I do I'll check my seeds, if I have a few BS seeds I can spare I'll let you know and if you want some I'll send them to you and we can try again in the fall. I say let's show all them experts and get some anyhow.
Re: Brussels Sprouts?
Yes! Keep in touch about that!! I am so excited that my son is spending the night with a friend whose Mom will have to take them to school in the morning and I get to stay home and set up my garden!!!! Yippee! And make my compost tumbler. Yippee again! Blog coming soon...

Re: Brussels Sprouts?
Oh yes! Not everything in the garden gets an extra feeding, but some things do. The Brussels sprouts are heavy feeders and I want them to make more foliage, so I add a handful of dried blood every few weeks. The dried blood adds nitrogen (which makes more foliage) and I keep hoping I will get sprouts that look like this.kerriejo1961 wrote:Thanks, Chicago!!

Re: Brussels Sprouts?
Probably, as they are a cool crop. I will be trying again in the fall, if I can get some seeds.

BS (Brussels sprouts) an oh so underapppreciated vegetable. So delish! Are any of you planning on growing BS?

Re: Brussels Sprouts?
Yep .....but I planned them last year and than forgot to start up in time to replace my peas.
Re: Brussels Sprouts?
Deb, the wee plants will keep. I sow my Brussels sprouts early (so I don't forget) and they can wait to go into the bed.

Re: Brussels Sprouts?
Once again I've got empty squares I still cannot believe how efficient the sfg method is. I've never grown so many things in a single season!
Anyway, I'm off once again to the garden center to pick up some brussel sprout seed. *Sigh* I guess I might as well get broccoli while I'm at it
