MY FIRST HARVEST sort of

Prior to today, I had harvested only two cherry tomatoes, some basil, flat leaf parsley, 3 radishes and maybe 7 everbearing strawberries. We had such a miserable spring on the Oregon Coast with lots of rain and cold until middle to late June that I had to replant almost everything. I did leave the pitiful tomatoes that the deer nibbled in early June and now they are looking pretty good with quite a few small green tomatoes. Then before I could do more than harvest a couple of leaves, all of my spinach, lettuce, poc choi and radishes bolted in just a few days. waaaaaah

Now that it is August, things seem to be humming along. The Oregon Coast does not get hot in the summer, so what most of you grow as early crops we can do spring thru fall. We do have serious problems trying to grow peppers, eggplant and other heat loving plants though. Harvested my first broccoli today(I am so sorry I only planted two but we will see how the side shoots do) my first sugar snaps and one early girl tomato. Looking forward to eating my own fresh veggies as the summer progresses.

Sounds like you are having the same troubles with weather this year as others up in that zone. Im not sure what zone you are in, but I know others in wash and other areas have had such a mild mild summer, it has been rough for them. It will perk up, Im really hoping for a longer summer for you folks up there

Think I've got it now. My first two heads of broccoli, small bunch of sugar snap peas and first early girl tomato.

That broccoli looks better than anything I have ever harvested. And the red of that tomato is gorgeous. Hopefully, there is more to come.

It's been that kind of year-I'm still getting peas from a planting in late February.

First tomato other than some cherry tomatoes. Left it on the vine till it almost fell off it was so ripe. Really small though. Lots of small green tomatoes on all of my plants.

Between my sfg and multiple 5 gal buckets I have 13 tomato plants. 2 early girls, 2 basic romas, 2 sweet 100's, tomatillos, Black Prince (a Russian), Northern Delight or Beaver Lodge (can't find the plant tags, and one of them got broken off by a helpful neighbor when she was weeding for me), Chocolate Cherry, Striped Roman, Pineapple, and one Beef Master. Here's hoping we will have a longer "summer" to allow these to grow and ripen, since we had such a cold and wet late spring.

I almost waited too long to harvest the broccoli, the smaller head was starting to loosen up and I'll bet it would have flowered by the next day.

Our normal highs are low to mid 60's here. We may get a few days in the high 70's and one or two when it actually reaches 80, but that is truly the exception.

Then again, we usually have frost only 4 or 5 nights in the winter, though last winter we had a couple of nights in the 20's, which was NOT NORMAL, so we lost plants that usually overwinter here.

We are on a lake in a little protected valley within one mile of the ocean, so we really have a mini-micro climate. ( mini micro, is that redundant?)

We grew up in DC and Northern VA, so we know heat and humidity. That is why we retired to the Oregon Coast.
