maze garden updates

i posted pictures of my maze garden quite a while back and promised updates. Well - better late than never right?
this is not a "true" SFG. many of the elements of sfg have been used for this garden - maybe you can consider it a hybrid. here are some pics:

April 2 - filled with dirt, cages in place, a very few early starts in the ground, ready to go!!!


April 17 - 25 tomato starts (all heirloom varieties), strawberries, and some pepepr starts in ground. corn, beans, squash and zuchinni have all sprouted.


May 9 - everything is growing nicely


May 22 - tomato plants in one bed have already outgrown cages. tomatoes in back bed are getting close to outgrowing cages. tomaotoes on EVERY plant now (some very small) peppers on half of the plants, cucumber plants at about 2 feet or so.

well - thats where we are so far. i have not had to water very often lately, as we have had at least one good rain per week here in my part of GA and the rainbarells seem to cover the rest of my watering needs.

Very cool. I love it. At first I thought it was going to be all corn. It looks very healthy and fun. I am impressed with your bush beans, I am beginning to think I will have no fresh beans this year.

I am so impatient watching my full grown Early Girl tomatoes stay green! I want a garden tomato!

Looks like you have a handle on things. What are you going to grow next to the bush beans - that space looked empty o far.

And what did you photoshop into that picture? A wolverine? Or is it a stuffed one. LOL.

chopper - you thought it would be a "maize" garden huh? i have quite a few different varieties of bush beans there, each variety planted 1 - 2 weeks apart. I hear you about the early girls. I have almost 30 tomato plants total with 20 different heirloom varieties growing that my students all got to start in my science class room. I was planning to only do these varieties, but the prospect of eating BLT's and garden fresh vine ripened maters sooner helped me decide to go ahead and get 2 early girls. as of now there are over a dozen on each of the 2 early girls and some a re getting pretty big. I cannot wait for those to ripen!
next to the beans, i have carrots (apparently i am not good at growing carrots) and come cukes (i have cukes in another bed that are doing great!) that my students started in the class room - these have not grown since april when i transplanted them. so i am now trying to decide what to do about that space - give the plants a chance and keep waiting, or rip it all out and put in something else (anyone have suggestions??)

as for the random creature in the most recent full garden picture - that is a 3d coyote decoy that i am borrowing from the school where i teach. we use them to keep the geese off the football field with geat success and i have been using one to help keep the bords out of my strawberries (along with the reflective spinner above, and a net) with very postive results.

What a lovely garden!! I am telling my tomatos to hurry up too! The first one never makes it to the house. I eat it in the garden!!

thanks all! the kids do love it, they used to have garden races, but now that everything is growing they cannot run in there any more. they all have a favorite herb, and i will let them have one leaf to chew on while we walk around and they get to look and learn about the garden. it has been a great learning experience for them! (and for the daddy)

another update on the maze garden - tomato plants are all taller than me now. i have picked 3 ripe tomaotes so far (all were promptly used for the first BLT's of many for the summer). 3 cuke plants are over 4 feet tall - but we have had poor polination on them so far, most of the growing cukes are mishaped. we have had 4 meals from our bush beans and have made 4 jars of baby food as well. i have picked alot of peppers so far including jalapenos, anaheim, and cow horns. some of the corn is quite tall and has tassles now. here is a pic we took the other day from up high.

Looks like the coyote escaped!

no that fence is specifically designed to contain coyote decoys - i asked at home depot before i bought it. i actually move him around every day to three days to keep the pests guessing. he is to the right of where he was in the other pictures. you can barely make out his back above the bush beans.

Initially, I totally thought the decoy was your dog taking a, well, er, relieving himself in that corner. LOLOL. I looked, and did a double take, and looked again, and thought "that thing doesn't look real, but kinda". Glad I know it's a decoy.
