garlic
I am planning on planting Garlic. I am thinking either 12 or 16? Just don't want to over-crowd the bed? Thank you.

Re: garlic
Welcome aboard, Plant Me! I just plant 9 per square - the bulbs get too big to plant any closer.
There are a lot of threads on this site on garlic if you do a search. Here are a couple of them that you might want to browse through:

Re: garlic
I came across this website and thought I would share as it answered the question if I missed the plant out date for my garlic cloves in Oct./Nov and wanted to plant out in the spring what would I have to do for my German White hard neck variety to thrive. I plant at 4 per square, starting 3" in from all sides, I have a 6" spacing for my when finished 3"+ bulbs. I have grown soft necks and could probably push to 9 per square, the finished bulbs are much smaller. Here is the link to the information on garlic.

Four per square seems to work best for my Music hardneck garlic.

Re: garlic
We never seem to have enough garlic! We have already used up our supply of fermented garlic, and it will be quite a while before the next crop is ready for harvest.

You bet! What a wealth of knowledge on this site!sanderson wrote:175 threads on garlic. Thank you, Scorpio Rising
I plant 5/SF if large, and 9/SF if normal...doesn’t seem to matter much really? This year I am planting Georgian Fire (first time—spicy supposedly) and German Hardneck. I love love love the scapes from hardneck varieties! YUMMO!

If you are pushed for getting the new stock from a seed merchant use big shop purchased bulbs & split them down into individual cloves .
Plant one clove at roughly 9 to 12 per square foot even spaced apart and fill the whole four foot square bed with it you'll not be sorry at the outcome .
Gently dress the soil with some dried fish blood & bone meal trickled out your hand close to the ground & lightly work it in the top 1/2" of soil when the garlic is about a foot high ..don't get any in the crooks of the leaves .
Last year ar I did two such beds and am able to put some of the bigger bulbs aside for this years plants , all 80 or so of them.

Re: garlic
Plantoid, do you plant hard neck varieties that get the scapes? You are in the far northern latitude and it seems that it's too far north for soft neck varieties that I am forced to grow.
Re: garlic
I planted the garlic cloves around October 1 and they are over a foot tall and some of the leaves are already turning yellow. I'm thinking I will try planting some of the California soft necks mid February as a test.
Anyone else plant garlic in the spring instead of late fall?
