I am going to have to try turnip raw, too... but until I grow some, it'll have to wait. Does raw kohlrabi count? Smile

They're really close, Megan, but not exactly the same.

I think kohlrabi has a little denser texture and a "greener" flavor - leaning a bit more toward the cabbage. Kohlrabi tastes to me like the inner stalk of the cabbage head, which we trim and eat raw, sprinkled with salt, or throw in the pot and cook along with the cabbage leaves.

I learned sometime or other that kohlrabi was my grandfather's favorite vegetable (or one of them, anyway) so I have tried them from time to time. I like them but have yet to be really in love with them.... so I'm hoping this year with home-grown I can get there.

I am really new to cabbage as a regularly eaten veg, I need to fix that. (I have two extremely weak cabbage seedlings in my SFG right now, I think I will have to wait for fall at a shot to really grow one.)

YIKES! I tried to plant turnips today....when I opened the top of the pkg and sorta squeezed it to open it up the bottom popped open and those tiny little things went flying---every single one of them. Some landed on my shirt .... I never knew they were soooooo tiny and of course they are the color of my bedding mix so there was no recovering them. I will have them coming up haphazard in every square! I think I will stick to buying veggie bedding plants!! turnips - first time for turnips, results looking good - Page 2 Icon_smile

CarolinTexas.... don't buy vegetable plants for turnips! They won't transplant well, and besides, they grow so quickly from seed that you will pay a huge amount more and get worse results.
I know turnip seed are very small (but large compared to many other seeds which can be like dust!)
Can I suggest you buy one of the those little seed dispensers/sowers, which has an adjustable hole on the delivery end? If you carefully pour some seed into one of these, it's far easier to sow just one or two seeds at a time without accidents.

Thanks BertiFox.... I've never seen a seed dispenser but I definitely need one! I will see if I can find one.
