This looks like what you might want to do for some quick starts.

Let the proper number of heads get to this stage, separate, then plant them right away. I bet they take off better than the regular method. Of course you can't store or ship them like this so no one would sell this stage.

If there a reason to hang the garlic, versus just chopping the top off and roots off and curing it?  I chopped.

I had 2/13 heads that were beginning to separate into cloves....not bad for a rookie!

I think the main reason for leaving the tops on is to braid them into a string. Soft necks are ready to go, hard necks need to have the flower stem cut off.

I grow hardneck garlic and I harvest the scapes before the garlic bulbs are ready.  I leave the leaves on the bulbs so that it is easy to hang them up in the garage in a way that provides good air circulation around the bulbs while they are curing.

OK, I get it now...will you personally use all that garlic between now and 1 year from now?  Do you just leave it down there?

Question: Is everyone's garlic late this year? Or do you Northern folks plant it in the spring so that is why you are harvesting in July-August?

I always plant in late October/early November here in Central Oregon.

My garlic has been ready for harvest in July.

No, this is normal time for garlic harvest in the North. We plant in October and the plants go dormant all winter, waking up again in April when the ground is warm enough. So time wise it is similar to as if we planted in the spring, and we can plant in the early spring but the bulbs are smaller then.

Thank you for clarification.

Southern latitudes, do you also plant in the fall and what month is your average mature harvest? I will have 8 squares to dedicate to garlic this fall.

Well I'll try it again just ready to push the send button and my computer shut down we're on the tail end of a thunder storm down here. Like I was saying Last year was the first for garlic down here I planted ( using grocery store garlic for seed) on 9/1 and harvested on 4/10Garlic - Garlic Growing Lovers - Page 2 Img_2614  I just placed my seed order for garlic and they don't ship till the later part of September so I will be running late this year, Just thinking I still have one or two heads left I may plant them on 9/1 just to see what a month will make

Newbe, You gave me an idea. I will plant grocery store soft-neck garlic every week in Sept. Usually I plant Oct 1. Thanks for the idea.

I got my garlic dug. I don't really know why I cure garlic the way I do. I lay it out on the picnic table out of the weather with its leaves and roots still on. In a week or so when the leaves and stalk is dry I will cut off most of the stalk and the roots, and rub off any dirt on the outer covers. Then they will go into a burlap bag that hangs in the mud room.

To fill in the info about my garlic growing for my region.
I planted 10/23/16 and covered with 4-6 inches of old hay for mulch.
In years past I dug them up first week of August and this year it took an extra week for the leaves to really start browning. This spring it was later before the ground thawed for them to get started.

I just planted 8 squares of garlic and presoaked the peeled cloves. THe soaking softens the skins so much that they fall off. I am uneasy about this but I guess I will see in the spring. Last year I soaked but did not peel.
I remember some one worrying about streaked leaves on their garlic plants, I am reading that that is a symptom of mites and a reason to presoak your cloves before planting.
Article on presoaking http://www.gardenguides.com/how_7271415_soak-garlic-before-planting.html

This year I planted one square of a new variety, Georgia. The rest is German red from my last year planting.

The rule down south is plant after the first frost but before the first freeze.  But that is pretty much hard to predict.  I try to plant between 10/28 (avg 1st frost) and 11/9.  I have harvested as early as 5/21 and as late as 6/6.  It all depends on the weather mostly in spring/summer.  I plant softneck garlic.  Inchelium Red, Red Toch, Chets Italian.  The varieties have become mixed up over the years so I have no idea if one or all of these varieties are getting planted each year.  I just replant the largest cloves and doesn't matter what variety they are.

OH...sorry SR...I just saw your questing from before.  I will use it all eventually.  Yes, it stays right there on the line until I use it, then I clip a few and bring them up to the kitchen to give away, plant or eat.
