Post  Marie from Long Island Fri Mar 04, 2016 12:23 pm

I'm just about to start my second attempt at a SFG. My hubby made a 4x5 box that I will be filling with Mel's mix. Today I wanted to test some of my (old and new) seeds for germination rate and take a first pass at determining what to plant this spring. Any suggestions for what would grow well in zone 7A? Thanks, and God bless, Marie

Hi Marie! Yea, another 7A-er!

I've started kale, mustard, collards, numerous lettuces and broccoli so far inside. I also planted some sugar snap peas, spinach & mustard seeds outside under cover but it may be too early. Especially since it's snowing right now.
lots o

The coming week is supposed to be in the 50's here so I'm thinking I'll transplant a lot of my starts outside.

What are you thinking of planting?

Hi Everyone! Empty Veggies, etc.

Post  Marie from Long Island Fri Mar 04, 2016 1:06 pm

Hi CC,

I would like to grow carrots, broccoli, garlic, onions, bell peppers, potatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, basil, and a few others tbd.

I think I will do rosemary in a separate container so it doesn't take over the box!

My hubby has tomatoes covered. In fact, some tomato plants came back last year from seeds that fell the previous year.Very Happy

I just made some Fideo Soup today from tomatoes I canned 1-1/2 years ago. It's the best batch I've made so far!

Marie, stick the garlic bulbs in the ground asap and you may get some this year! I plant mine on Halloween for the following year but I planted some extras on 1/31/16 this year and they recently sprouted.  I was shocked.
Shocked

I also canned tomatoes back when I was still eating a lot of them and they were the best I'd ever put in my mouth bar none, so I know exactly what you mean.  I used a mix of all the varieties in my garden.   I'll tell you a secret...some of us agree that the volunteer tomato plants (the ones that come from last year or the compost) are the healthiest. So hang on to those babies!
Wink
Speaking of which, I'll probably be starting tomatoes & peppers inside early this month, if not this weekend.  I think we're in for an early spring.  What do you think?

Hi LI Marie from Ohio!  Welcome to the forum, so glad you found us!  So it sounds like you have a great plan for the upcoming growing season.  I love Rosemary, and have it potted in a terra cotta that I bring in and overwinter.  All other herbs I have to either grow from transplants or seeds.

Are you following the Square Foot Gardening methods?  Any info you can provide about plans, etc is very helpful!

from Kelejan  :canada:

The first year I planted garlic it was in the spring and I did have a reasonable harvest.
For the last two seasons I have planted in the fall and the results are getting better and better.
