Re: Carrot Week 2014
Oh good, I'm glad it's carrot "month". I planted April 3rd and some are finally showing their teeny heads. I am hoping to get more started within the next few days.

Re: Carrot Week 2014
This is my official realization that this has been a screwy year to think about my SFG. It's mid-May, and not only haven't I planted my Carrot Week carrot seeds, but I haven't even pulled last year's tomato & pepper stalks -- and my 2 remaining overwintered Kale plants are now beginning to flower. It seems like we went from an extended Winter, skipped over Spring, and now summer's just about here! Even tho' I have been extraordinarily busy, I don't know if that's an excuse.

Re: Carrot Week 2014
My carrot month carrots sprouted a couple of days ago. I don't expect much from them since I don't seem to do well with carrots, but it'll be fun trying. And at least I can eat the greens..
A couple of squares of last year's carrots are still in the garden and growing. One has larger carrots and one has string roots still.

Sometimes that is just the way things are and you can't change it! You can still plant the carrots, even if you missed carrot week/month!

Perhaps pre warm the square with some dark coverings like a square of a black plastic bin bag or a glass pane .
Carrots take from 5 to 21 days to germinate depending on the weather and soil moisture
Maybe look up the soil germination temps for optimum carrot germination ..I seem to think it's over 65 oF .

Re: Carrot Week 2014
I just came across this thread. Haven't poked around in this forum much yet this year, though my garden is doing well. It's my second year doing SFG and my first year growing carrots. I did it because they're my daughter's (4 years old) favorite. I filled a half whiskey barrel with MM and let her plant her own. I even let her select the varieties herself from the seed catalog. One side has Sugarsnax (12") and the other side has Sweet Treat Hybrid (6"). She planted those May 3. I planted a square of the 6" carrots that day, but I had to wait for a "hat" so I could add more MM for 12" carrots. So those made it in on May 14. We've had a very late start to spring in central MA this year! They've all sprouted, though. Now if I can just keep my son (18 months) from "creative pruning" of our beds we'll be all set!

Re: Carrot Week 2014
I just checked my carrots to see how they're doing and nothing yet. Is anybody getting carrots from the week / month planting?

My carrots are coming along nicely.

Re: Carrot Week 2014
Although my carrot germination wasn't great, now that the temps are up and the drip irrigation system tweaked, they're coming along nicely.

Wow, thanks for sharing in my celebrations, you guys!southern gardener wrote:Beautiful CC!! what variety? we are getting some whoppers, big old chunky guys!! Congrats!!
Show us some photos of some of those pig poo whoppers, SG. I'm sure they're amazing! This variety is called Touchon. I had some success with them in the fall of last year so I thought I'd try them again for carrot week. It worked! I just planted them again for fall along with the other varieties that I haven't had any luck with. I know there's a secret in there somewhere. Experimenting never ends. & I liked it!
any other other photos of harvested carrot week carrots?

Re: Carrot Week 2014
Super carrots!
I planted a type called "little fingers" because I was skeptical about my ability to grow carrots.
I think I left them in the ground too long, so they are trying to be " big finger" carrots.
Next year, I'm going for a regular size carrot. Thanks to M.M. my gardening confidence grows.

Here is one of the chubby ones...the big fat one in the middle. They're all so FAT! The purple and small ones are "Purple Haze" they are really taking their time, but boy, are they sweet! I'll try and remember to take pics of the chubby ones!!CapeCoddess wrote:Wow, thanks for sharing in my celebrations, you guys!southern gardener wrote:Beautiful CC!! what variety? we are getting some whoppers, big old chunky guys!! Off subject, but our Tromboncino squash are doing really well! I posted in another thread. Grandson and I will be celebrating with milkshakes tomorrow, since they're long enough for him to "bonk" his head on! LOL
Here's the pic of the carrot...a piece of lettuce cut off the bottom
