Nonna,

In country-speak, you're right, of course. "He did good" Is incorrect in Standard English. Good in this example is used as a noun, as in "Mother Theresa's life consisted of doing good." Sometimes, "good" is used as an adjective, as in "He grew a good garden."

In the sentence, "He did well," "well" is an adverb, modifying "did."

I hope I didn't take your comment too seriously!

May I be deputized? I'm constantly distracted by grammar and punctuation errors, and not just on this forum. They're everywhere!

I am not at liberty to deputize you. All I may suggest, at this point, is exercising self control.Wink

I can only try. If only there were a simple, universal way to teach these basics, reading anything would be a much more pleasurable experience.

I occasionally participate on a non-gardening forum.  This is part of their TOS:

Writing Standards

In order to use this forum, you must meet our writing standards. Proper spelling, capitalization, grammar and punctuation are important to us.

All content must:

   Use proper English (no txtspk)
   Be spelled correctly
   Use appropriate punctuation

While these rules may seem strict and arcane, it’s imperative to keeping the level of discourse at the highest quality.

Please give us your very best efforts, and don’t take it personally if you have a question pushed to editing to fix some typos. We’re sticklers.
The mods will pull a post for failing to comply with the writing standards.  It does make reading and comprehending posts easier and faster, but it's amazing how many errors still slip through unnoticed by the mods.  Ironically, swearing is permitted. (Spelled correctly, of course! Razz  )

I think we have very good quality writing on this forum, even though it's not emphasized, and I appreciate that.

(Now I'm sitting here thinking about my 7th grade English class, when we spent the year learning how to diagram sentences!)

Post  Nonna.PapaVino 8/25/2013, 8:32 pm

Yep, Donna, y'all done took me too seriously.  I was jesting.  However, there are those who would attempt to totally wipe out local dialects in the United States.  But I love to listen to different ways of speaking in different parts of this US.  For instance, great grandma Bruhl, who had a great sense of "English correctness," was wont to say, "Y'all have time to carry me to the grocery store?"  Of course, she didn't mean literally to lift her off her feet and lug her down the street, it was just the dialect of the rural Texas community.  Everyone knew she meant the auto, car, carriage would "carry" her to the store.  Pronunciations also delight me: in Texas a small rivulet is pronounced "creek," while in Idaho, it is a "crick," same spelling as Texas, different pronunciation.  Radio and later television have led to a much greater homogenizing language across the States, but have scrubbed out some of the beautiful individuality of its regional speech.  (Please help me off this here soapbox) Nonna

Nonna, I can't help you off your soap box. My father, a stickler for proper grammar, pronunciation, spelling, etc., often said, "Ya done good."

And one of my all time favorites from my mother's father -
... the good Lord willin' and the crick don't rise.

Yep, Martha, and I lost count of the folks I met in Texas who were in the "ahl bidness."
But they pronounced "creek" correctly.  Nonna

Post  camprn 8/27/2013, 9:47 pm

"Brisk and lively moves the harvestman, to gather the rich and various productions. He now realizes the reward of his toil and attentions. Is it not labor that makes a man happy? What if we could obtain these fruits, our necessary supply of food, etc., without any exertion of our own; would not the consequences be indolence and slothfulness? Society would, indeed, be in a wretched state."
–The Old Farmer’s Almanac, 1853

I don't know anything about the Surface, but if you're looking for a tab, the Nexus 7 or 10 can't be beat. I have the 7 and love it.
If you're looking more laptop, the Chromebook is top notch and cheaper. I've also got a chromebook and wouldn't trade it for nothin Very Happy

Gave granddaughter a surface for her birthday in Jan. Of course the surface pro came out in Feb. She was a high school sophomore and loved it but you couldn't load Norton antivirus on it. So when the college sophomore grandson's birthday came up in Mar. he got the surface pro. He loves it.
