ONIONS - Fall Onions Empty Fall Onions

Post  hruten 7/21/2012, 8:10 am

I've been googling again and haven't found enough answers.
Can someone explain to me fall planting of onions. Mother Earth News had an article that said seeds were to be started indoors under lamps in November. However, I thought some members here mentioned "overwintering" their onions outside in beds like garlic. Do you handle them the same way?

This will be my first time planting an actual bulb onion. I got "CANDY" seeds from agway. I searched here too, but was unable to dicern whether the fall onions talking about sets, seedlings, or seeds.
....SO MUCH MORE TO LEARN

I'm really interested in this too. I bought some short day varieties and I am going to try to start the seed in the garden like garlic and hope for the best. Would also love some advice!

In South Carolina you may be able to get away with planting onions in the fall, but generally speaking, here in NH it doesn't work out well. I plant my onions in Spring as soon as the ground can be worked.

well, both, sort of... I start seeds in March (inside) and hope they grow to set size for planting the following year. This year I had to buy sets at the grain store. Sad

Just to make sure I understand.

In NH our growing season is so short that we need to plant seeds early spring. Then dig in the fall. The onions we dig will become sets for the next spring?

In NY we lived across from a commercial onion field... wish I would have paid more attention. I think they planted sets though and then harvested in september. Their onions were pretty pungent tasting. tongue

To add a run-on question. Is garlic the only veggie that we overwinter? If not, what is the list?
