Ladybugs
Ladybugs eat aphids. Maybe no aphids means aphid-eating ants will leave?
You can buy ladybugs online. Like 1500 ladies for 13 bucks. You let them go at dusk in your garden at the base of your plants, they won't fly at night, so they stay there. They will make homes there eat all the bugs bugging your plants and VOILA no more bugs. My brother in law is a pest control guy and he hates sparying the chemicals in his yard (yes, ironic I know)...so this is what he does. Not sure if this will work for the sugar ants...but should for the ones eating aphids.

Soap on ants
Shoda wrote:Yesterday I asked at the nursery. The guy there said that the ants can section off an area of a garden so that the water runs away from it and it stays dry so they can have a nice dry nest. This would be an issue because any plants near the nest would not get enough water....
Since I am not looking to start an ant colony, I want a way to stop them before they move into the SFG beds I am putting up. Anyone try diluted soap water on the ants? I am trying to stay as organic as I can.

I've found that soap (I used shaved Palmolive in a spray bottle) will kill the ants and other insects on contact, but it did not seem to phase them after the sprayed areas dried.
