ONIONS - Onions Dying Empty Onions Dying

Post  Green(Horn)Thumb 3/17/2012, 10:19 am

I am new to this so I am probably doing alot wrong. About a month ago I started 48 onions from seed. I used the burpee self watering with the tablets. I have them under 16 hours of light as read here. Lately a couple have begun to die and shrivel up to nothing in a day. There seems to be some whitish mold on the soil and I am assuming I am keeping things to wet. I think this system suggests watering once or twice a week yet every time i check the tray is out of water. Many seem to be doing good but if i loose one or two a day i wont have much left. Do they need a little fertilizer? Bigger pot (transplant), a fan for some air, or just les water?

ONIONS - Onions Dying Empty onion woes

It sounds like they're over-wet. If the soil is dry beneath the surface, I'd rewater, but otherwise not. I'm not familiar with the system you have. Does it have a cover? Is the cover still on?
A fan blowing on them could help, as would perhaps cutting back on the water. They should be kept uncovered once they've sprouted.

ONIONS - Onions Dying Empty Re: Onions Dying

Who knows? too wet? too dry? fungus? lack of light? It is a mystery. Most of my onion seedlings crapped out too. I think I will try one more time with seed and if they give up the ghost again I will just go with sets. Rolling Eyes

On the other hand, my leek seedlings are going gangbusters. What a Face
