I have been searching for what I have always known as multipying onions and looking for a source for sets.. I am in Colorado Springs. I have found seeds but looking for sets, had some I got in Louisiana had them hanging in garage (while in Texas) drying for next season, father-in-law thought they were dead junk LOL and tossed in trash!!! Any help greatly appreciated!! thx

Looks like FIL needs a little education, nancyfancy. I bet he never does that again.
Re: Perennial Onions
You got that right. I just cried couldn't do anything else. I'd had them 4-5 years...

Perennial Onions
nancyfancy,
Don't feel too bad. The onions you were growing in Texas and Louisiana may not have produced very well in Colorado Springs because it's too far north. (You're parallel with Washington DC and Cincinnati.)
Dixondale Farms website has a lot of information about onions. You can find them at: http://www.dixondalefarms.com/category/onion_plants
Multiplier onions are available from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange for delivery in fall. http://www.southernexposure.com/perennial-onions-multiplier-potato-onions-c-120_219.html
Hope this helps.

Next time put a note on them 'Hands Off"
I don't have any 'potato onions' but I do have some Eygptian onions, which you're welcome to some as soon as the babies come on. I guess I need to get some of the other ones too. Do they replace growing a bulbing onion?

I also have Egyptian Walking Onions and you are welcome to some bulbuls when they are ready. I am in the far NE corner of SD, so I know they will grow for you in CO as well!

Re: Perennial Onions
It depends on what you want I guess.. We love green onions and the ones I had after they start growing good, you would pull the dirt away from the base and snap off the onion, leaving the base in the ground then covering it. Pick as you need. They would be pulled out for summer, left hanging to dry, then replanted in the fall.. The base is the important part and can give you an endless supply of "green onions" not bulbs :-) I don't know what egyptian onions are but would love to give them a try....

Re: Perennial Onions
Thanks GloriaG checked out sites and the egyptian or walking onion is not what I'm looking for. The ones I want will grow a stalk with a seed pod but I always cut it off only replanting the base in fall :-)

Re: Perennial Onions
An egypt....onion supplys green onions, been told there is a bulb in the ground, but have never dug it up. It grows green, then it will put on a small bulb at top of stem, then a green onion will grow atop that. I just go with scissors and clip off what green onion I need.

Re: Perennial Onions
In addition to SESE, Territorial also has the yellow multiplier "potato onion". They have larger bags of them than SESE.
SESE sells 8 oz bags, and says they multiply to 10 times as much, which would be around 5 lbs. For me, that is not anywhere near enough as we eat around 50 lbs onions a year, let alone that you need to save some to replant. I had figured I'd need to keep replanting all of them for 2-3 years before I'd have permanent onions.
Territorial sells much larger bags that might be more useful, but they're a bit expensive.
Also, they tend to be planted like garlic, planted in fall for harvest the next summer. So finding sets NOW is unlikely. You can buy them now, but they won't ship until fall.
