Fruit trees in Mels Mix

Hey guys,

I just ordered some fruit trees online and I planned on putting them in containers. I was wondering if I should use mels mix with them or if I should use something else?

Glad to have you join us.

Our climates are soooooo different, but I do have one Montmorencey (sp?) Cherry in a huge pot filled with Mels' Mix.

We also have another PNW gardener with fruit trees in containers filled with Mels Mix.

I really think it may depend on the fruit tree as some do have specific requirements. I have not tried citrus, as most are not hardy here.

There is no pretending that fruit trees will just grow in the top 6 inches of soil. That said, were it I, I would build a 4X4, dig my hole as recommended by the nursery and fill the hole and 4X4 with MM. Nothing like a good start.

We have three citrus trees in containers, but we used cactus potting soil since citrus trees want very well drained water, I think MM might retain too much water for them?

I think its the peach trees that will die quickly if they are in too much water. Wouldn't that be because of lack of air, and isn't the vermiculite supposed to take care of that? No knowledge about that just a thought.

The reason I potted my cherry tree in Mel's Mix is because of the great drainage. Between the peat and vermiculite, the mix is still light, moist and there is no water pooling in the pot at all.

I live on the Oregon Coast and our climate is wet, wet, wet during the winter and spring. Our rainy season runs October thru April or May with an average of 69 inches of rain annually.
