Yikes, is garlic supposed to be growing now?
Ok, guys, garlic rookie here. I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and planted a square of China Stripe garlic October 21. I've had my beds under lightweight row cover and went to check them more thoroughly today (my day off). Well, the garlic is already shooting up little green sprouts!
Thrilling to see my first garlic shoots, but I thought, from hearing all you garlic aficionados that it wasn't supposed to send up green shoots till spring. Of course, it's still warmer here than most places, even in November. Mid-October was supposed to be a good time to plant here.
What do you guys think - is my first attempt at garlic doomed? Have I mentioned lately how glad I am to have this forum and its members to consult with my gardening questions?

I planted my garlic in Oct. too. We plant in the South as a fall/winter plant.I don't know when the bulb grows,oh well.
I don't think the row cover is necessary for garlic, at least not for the cold, garlic and onions like the mild winters, even take the few snows that we get here in SC. My garlic is up about 6 inches so far.
I planted garlic from the grocery store, even bought 2 cloves of elephant garlic. It will be huge, don't know how many cloves on a elephant garlic.

Happy birthday, littlejo!
And thanks for the reply! I wasn't sure you were supposed to see anything green until spring! I did save another square's worth of seed garlic to plant in November just in case this didn't do well. I'm glad to know it's ok and that you're is also shooting up. I'm looking forward to trying homegrown garlic (eventually, I know it takes a while).
I didn't really put the row cover on for the garlic - it's just in the same bed with some other things that I was trying to protect from bugs!
Thanks again!

Re: Yikes, is garlic supposed to be growing now?
I planted supermarket garlic around October 20th - four squares from 2 bulbs. In three squares the garlic is sleeping nicely; in the fourth, it all popped up and is six inches tall. Some sycamore leaves blew into the garden, so I gathered them up to put into that one square, but then the wind blew them away!
