Re: Requests for Rookie Topics?
I am sort of bumping this thread so we can get it up and running again soon. I have a lot of ideas that I can slowly work on, but I really liked the rotation we had going.
Here is a consolidated list of suggestions:
Rookie Posts (Veggies)
Garlic
Herbs
Collards
Brussel Sprouts
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Strawberries
Onion from seed
Lettuce
Peppers
Beans
Rookie Topics (Fundamentals)
Companion Planting
Flowers in the SFG
Watering
Mulching
Composting
Vertical Gardening
Rain Barrels
Now, if I may... I will tell anyone that contributed so far should get a big thank you. So, !!
However, a lot of these topics are covered by Mel, himself, in the book All New Square Foot Gardening. There are chapters devoted to most of the "fundamental" topics. Also, most of the veggies are covered in the back half of the book with wonderful tables and charts to explain not only the basics of the veggie, but also how/when to grow them best.
Let's not overlook the book. And, let's not forget it's the best resource topic out there for learning to garden the SFG way. I can tell you that I went to the library weekly over the summer and checked out every gardening book I could find time to read. Most of them were crap....honestly. I couldn't get through most of them. Mel's book is an easy read if you don't have it. And, it tells you much more than SFG. It teaches you how to garden, but in an SFG. The skills transfer really well, as most row gardeners that have SFGs will tell you.
If you haven't bought a copy, you need to. Period. End of discussion. As for details, or online summaries, they will come slow. But, I don't think it helps anyone to regurgitate what Mel so eloquently lays out in his book. Just get the book.

I wonder if a topic on over-wintering might be possible?
