Garlic - Companions for onions & garlic Empty Companions for onions & garlic

Post  Old Hippie 5/1/2011, 7:05 pm

I normally plant onions and garlic randomly throughout my garden because they are supposed to repel bugs........so I have heard. However, my onions are not much bigger than golf balls here......even the variety of Spanish onions that are supposed to be fine for my short season don't get much bigger. I am on a quest to try to grow some that are at least a decent size. Tennis ball size would be marvellous and I can only dream of baseball sized ones.

Apparently, peas and beans are not good to plant next to onions and garlic. Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't grow squash of any kind (DH doesn't eat it) I do carrots, parsnips, various lettuce, spinach and chard, beets. Cucumbers are going in the new bed I plan to make for an unused section of driveway by the fence where they get lots of sun.

Well, I think that the onions will be good for the leeks which will be good for the garlic which will be good for the shallots which will be good for the onions... Shocked Shocked For production I am just planting them all together this year but next to beets and carrots.

Garlic likes beets and lettuce, doesn't like beans and peas.

Onions likes beets, cabbage, carrots, early lettuce, parsnip, pepper, spinach, strawberry, tomato, and turnip.
Doesn't like asparagus, beans, peas and sage.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, I think I will stick a few onion bulbs in the corners of my lettuces and brassicas, then radishes around my peas. that will take care of my cool weather plants.
