Garlic - are my garlic and onions alive? Empty are my garlic and onions alive?

Post  hookilau 6/14/2010, 8:16 am

I planted several onion and garlic in my first box about 3ish weeks ago.
Most have sent up little green shoots but a few have yet to make an appearance.

So I thought I'd dig them up and plant replacements, but the onion had roots growing out of the bottom so I stopped halfway through the dig to re-think my position.

There are about 2 squares that have nothing coming up. I'm afraid to dig them up thinking that they may be growing but I just don't know it....

What's up with that?

Did you plant them according to the directions? When I plant my onion and shallot sets, I place them on the soil surface in the square where I want them to be, to be sure of my placement. Then I just push them into the ground until the tip of the set is just under the surface. It took mine a few weeks to show me they were coming to life. I am also cautious of over watering. No worries, they will come along with time. Garlic - are my garlic and onions alive? Icon_wink

I had one lingerer in my onion square. I replaced it after all the others were up a few inches. The new one came up and caught up, too. The first on just sort of shrivelled.

I planted scallion seeds! It may be next year before I have scallions Garlic - are my garlic and onions alive? Icon_lol . Although I do see some "hairs" in that box! I planted them on May 28. They began to emerge about the 8th or 9th of June. They are supposed to be ready in 65 days. So they should be ready about the middle of August. We'll see.

Good luck with your plants. And try to have more fun than worry. Garlic - are my garlic and onions alive? Icon_smile

Garlic - are my garlic and onions alive? Empty silly me

Post  hookilau 6/15/2010, 10:01 am

It's just the darndest thing. Last week.....nothing.....this week....yawn, stretch, blink blink.... Garlic - are my garlic and onions alive? Icon_eek it's aliiiiiive!!!!!!

You guys were right, some really were just late bloomers. I should've started this square foot veggie gardening business a long time ago. I'm learning not to sweat the small stuff, that plants are resilient, to have patience and most of all....faith.

I'm the plant mama who 'loves' her plants to death. Getting the hang of not fussing with them so much and letting them do their thing.

I transplanted all my peppers and a chiles from pots into an 8" deep 4 x4 sf bed yesterday (overcast and threatened rain most of the day). Well the largest of them, a Poblano, bowed it's head and pouted most of the day but by sundown, it perked up.

Leaves felt plump and still very vital...this morning it's kinda hanging it's head a bit low again but I feel confident that he'll recover just fine. Garlic - are my garlic and onions alive? Icon_wink

Thanks everyone for your input!!
Scallion seeds sound like fun, I've been wanting to try bunching onions/scallions....and you're right...more fun---less worry Garlic - are my garlic and onions alive? Fresse
