How many cuttings to a crop of lettuce ..
How many times are you getting to cut your lettuce.. [pinch off tops or cut to eat] do you guys get before you plant is done?
I have some so far I have cut four or five times.. have you found there a cut off to just pull up and replant?
Thank you

When I can't get any decent leaves from it or I need the space for something I like more than lettuce.
Re: How many cuttings to a crop of lettuce ..
After a while the plant goes slightly bittter now is the time to make/sow the new ones .
I think it could be that the plant has finally extracted most of the nutrients from around its root ball .

I believe that it may have more to do with summer heat.

Perhaps , but we don't usually get the heat you do over on your side , 100 o F is considered fairly unique in the UK

Re: How many cuttings to a crop of lettuce ..
I cut on leaf lettuce all winter. When it gets hot, I change to lettuce that likes the heat.
I did learn something this year. I've been growing 'Tom Thumb' lettuce which makes a tight little head, big enough for just 1 person. I really like it cause it is crisp like iceberg.
I used to just pull it as I used it, but I planted the lettuce close so I cut the head off and left the roots. It grows another head! The seed pk. does not tell you.

That is so they can sell more seeds!
If they tell the lie enough, people will believe it!
Good going Jo!

I got some 'Jerico' seeds, but, I am going to try putting up a shade cloth to help keep 1 area cooler so maybe I can grow the normal stuff. I like Tom Thumb, Green Ice, Red Sails, Little gem.
I'm shading my spinach with a trellis full of green beans.

Here's one for you...a lettuce that is overpicked. And it's been about 5 times.
Is it a pinapple? Or a fret board?
Now to replace or to cut down to an inch and let it regrow?

Avad, what a cool pictures! I learned last year that if you cut all the leaves off and leave the roots and base there, it will regrow sweet like new lettuce. Or trim most of the leaves off around the outside and leave just the small tender leaves in the middle. I also discovered that if you pick your lettuce and it's bitter, soak it in cold water for a couple of hours and most of the bitterness leaves it.
