For those of you trying to decide on what species of wood to use for your SFG boxes:

2" x 10" x 8' pine = $ 4.29

2" x 10" x 8' Cypress = $ 25.92

2" x 10" x 8' Cedar = $ 27.05

These prices are for Senoia, Ga. (just south of Atlanta). Big price difference. I have finally decided on the pine.

That is pretty close to my cost here in houston. I would love to go with cedar but I am going with pine too

Another option for cedar is fence boards. Maybe it's a regional thing, but 1x6x6' cedar fence boards are very common here, and all the big box stores sell them. I stock up when they are on sale for $2 each; they come in handy for all sorts of garden related stuff.

I use the cedar fence boards for most of my beds. Thgis year a expanded my garden and all the new boxes are made with the 3.5" boards 2 high. These cost 1.07 and the the 5.5" cost 2.47. I use scrap 2x4 to connect the fence boards if I need a run more than 5'.

In my rural area, we have access to a lumber yard. A couple years ago I was able to order 2 x 6 x 8 white oak. I bought quite a few, eighteen as I remember, and got them for about $10 each. I called them about cedar this year, and it was about the same...

BTW, rough cut means actual 2" thick instead of 1 1/2" - these are heavy to handle and hard to drill. But hopefully they will keep lasting... 5 yrs and counting.

Mine are spruce and into their 4th year so the cedar should live quite a few years beyond that. Mine still aren't wearing out and I get lots of cold, freezing rain, snow (buried til last March), so weather hasn't ruined them. Of course, I made sure they were 2" wide and since they were from the lumber yard, they ARE 2" wide.
