what do you think about these prices???

I found a company from a friend and she said their stuff is pretty good. I have yet to talk to them, they have not picked up the phone. May just go by and check them out and ask some questions. But here are some of their prices what do you think

ALso what should I ask them to make sure this stuff is any good.

Hard part is how to load it and move it.

I could borrow a truck from my husbands work or they do deliver not sure about the cost on that yet..

Newstart, most of those items list topsoil or sand or both as ingredients.

Personally, I look for compost with no topsoil, sand or peat mixed in. It helps me be more accurate when mixing my Mel's Mix and getting the proportions correct.

The only composts are Mushroom Compost and Super Compost - Tri Compost. They both sound pretty, good, but you do want to make sure your 5 compost blend does not include more than 1/5th of any type of compost, such as mushroom compost.


Sorry I can't comment on the prices, because I never buy them in that large a quantity.

Thanks Furbalsmom I think that answered it. I will call and se if they have with out sand or maybe just a small amount of thier mushroom compost

Last year I paid $45 a cubic yard in New Jersey for Mushroom Compost, half that for leaf compost.

One cubic yard of compost fills a pick up with an 8 ft bed level to the top with a little room to spare. I can usually get two yards of mulch in the same truck as it's a lot lighter.

A cubic yard is one scoop of the dealer's front end loader. Bring a long a garden rake to level it out after it's dumped in your truck. It will take two people an hour or so of hard work to empty the pickup by hand.

I shovel out the pickup truck on to a large tarp and cover it with another top pending mixing into Mel's Mix.

The pickup should be equipped with heavy duty shocks if you're transporting any great distance.

The dealer will probably charge a variable amount for a certain radial distance from his place of business.

I pick up all my mulch and compost, but have crushed stone and large purchases delivered.

If you have bulk loads delivered, make sure that your driveway and dump site will take the weight of the truck. Our topsoil delivery person needed a tow to get out of our yard.

If I had to do it all over again, I would just use compost instead of topsoil for landfill. We used clean fill, then topsoil to level off our yard after cutting down some trees. The clean fill was clean, but a huge mistake as it was clay. The topsoil was ok, but just plain compost would have been easier to rake out and cheaper.

I'm a huge fan of mushroom compost. It does need to be mixed with other kinds of compost, vermiculite and peat moss before going into the box.

Out of the various types, the tri-compost one sounds good. If it smells like dirt, no ammonia ordor, then that is a good deal, if my math is correct. 1 cubic yard should yield 27 cubic ft. of compost. At the stores down here, just the mushroom compost is $6 per cubic ft, other types are a little less.

If you have to go get yourself, get a tarp and put in the truck before it is loaded. With a little help, you can slide it out onto the ground.

I know around here nothing is getting delivered for under $80 per trip... I can't tell you what it would be in your area, but the prices you listed for the soils do look similar.
One thing you could check on is bagging it yourself. Most places around here allow you to take out a shovel and bag it yourself. They have several bag sizes available and of course a fee for the bags.
I don't know how many boxes you are doing, but you can get good bagged compost pretty cheap, and you can read to see what's in them. I hit several stores and a nursery or two and found some great stuff for really cheap, and got the different types I needed.
I think Home Depot had at least 3 types, and probably no more then $4-5 per bag if memory serves and maybe even cheaper.
One thing to think about to, is that after you mix 5 different types of compost, you will generally have a pretty good amount. Your 4cu ' bag of Vermiculite will be the first to go and the most expensive.

It has wood compost in it. For some reason I thought wood compost wasn't great for gardening. Is it? I'm not really sure where I even got that idea.

When wood products like chips, branches, sawdust, etc are in the process of decomposing, they will hold on to the available nitrogen in the area, and the nitrogen will not be available to the plants. When the wood products have completely decomposed, they will release the nitrogen back into the soil.

Beauty bark (wood chips) on top of the ground as mulch is OK, but they shouldn't be turned into the soil around the plants.

If the wood is composted it should be fine. You should not see the wood chips! I use it in mine and have not had a problem. Musroom compost is what is leftover from growing mushrooms. I don't know what nutrients are left in this after using it as a growing medium, but it shouldn't be more than 1/5 of your compost.

This may be totally irrelevant .. but I have been hauling compost and manure for 6 weeks. Shovel by shovel and bucket by bucket. A bunch... I have found the best way for me to do it is to load it in buckets in the truck. Assorted containers. Again, my loading has been shovel to bucket. But when I get home , I can stand on the truck bed and pour the buckets out. I do not have to shovel the pick up bed out. I pour the containers out.

Again, I am not buying compost.. I am buying ingredients to compost with. I am a 62 year old man. And I wanted to build my body back up. Well I have worked hard. But I feel good doing it. But I ain't quite Popeye the Sailor Man, yet.

By what I have priced , $45 is a fair price.. fair in the sense of fair to both parties.

Last year I dropped 20 lbs putting my garden together. Of course I put some of it back on again eating my veggies from the garden. Still, the doctors were impressed and I hope to improve on last year's performance, both body-wise and garden-wise.

I think it's a strange and wonderful thing when a couple of men in their sixties are proud of shoveling manure.
