Hi out there,

Has anyone grown cardon in their SFG?

I'm thinking of trying it this year.

Curious in Kentucky.

HI there and Cardoon in my box 396615 to the SFG Forum. I have no idea what the plant is you are asking about. Does it have another name?

Camp - I've not heard of it either, but I found this on wikipedia, not sure if it's what's being referred to or not?

I was a click away from ordering seed for this, but I was not too successful with Artichokes so I decided to wait another year. I hope someone at the local farmers market is selling them so I can give them a taste test before committing the space to grow a square or four. Will you be starting a few?

Several years ago we inadvertently grew cardoon. We thought we had artichoke seeds, but the plants just didn't look right. These puppies grow TALL, I'm telling you. Wasn't until they flowered that we realized we had something besides artichokes. Cardoon flowers look like huge thistles, pretty, but not what was expected. Wasn't until a year or two later that we learned what was needed to get an edible vegetable out of the things. You must wrap the stalks to blanch them, then cut, clean and steam them for a side dish. Our experience? unwraped the stalks and found whole colonies of earwigs insisting we'd provided them with free condos. So, no, we still don't know what cardoon tastes like. Good luck on your research; keep us informed.....and use tangle foot below your blanching wraps. Nonna

YOUCH! The description says that the fronds are covered with fine spines which are irritating to the skin. I think I will steer clear of this plant!

I think no matter what it tastes like, I'd be a bit disappointed. The name sounds too much like a cookie...
