Hi there,
I live in the Dordogne. I've been interested in SFG for some time. I've the squares, but not the right growing medium mixture.
My garden soil is not good, the house is built on what was an old vineyard, so the soil is sandy, acid and as I live in La Roche Chalais, it's built on a rock! Growing anything is by trial and error. I plant and it either grows or dies! Nothing seems to reach its full potential, apart from pines and conifers.
I thought I'd make the raised beds. Is Vermiculite called that in Leroy Merlin or wherever? I don't go to Bordeaux that often, I was wondering if other building material shops would carry it.
Any advice gratefully received.
The weather has been so bizarre this year, it's been a struggle growing anything

Try sending a PM to Lafee who is also located in France.

There is also an Announcement in the Europe regional forum called Finding Vermiculite in Europe.

Bonne chance!

Hi there welcome to the forum, we have a vermiculite database. I do see some places in France. I am in the USA so I do not know the geography of France to pin point how close it is to you.

HI Tricia welcome .. do you know what vermiculite looks like ?

If not some one on here might be kind enough to put up a close up picture and some sort of thing along side to make a reference /comparison

I have a multilingual pal on another site he is 1/2 Scottish & 1/2 French and is a very educated helpfulsort of guy . He speaks most of the core languages of the EEC fluently at a high level .

I'll ask him a few things wrt vermiculite and then PM his reply to you.

And tell us a little bit about yourself, too! Your written English is flawless - are you an ex-pat? It is amazing how wine comes from land not suitable for growing much of anything else!

Hi there,
Sorry to disappoint but I'm not French at all, I had to take early retirement and as I owned a 'holiday home' here, decided to come and live here, from London, England
I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and have had several operations in the past few years on hands and feet which restrict my gardening somewhat, although once stuck in, it's amazing what one can achieve (and suffer for the next day! Very Happy)
I live on the edge of a small country town (3000 pop) My garden is not enormous about 1000 sq metres. There used to be large pine trees but these were blown down in the great storm of '99.
The garden is rather exposed I suppose, very hot summers, the grass just dies, although it's mostly weed, and then quite cold nights in the winter, although this year it's oddly warm.
I gave up trying to plant things in the ground as for a start it's practically impossible to dig and the top soil is very shallow, if there is any at all, just sand.
Vines grow best in rubbish soil, amazing really, but they have enormously long tap roots, in fact my neighbour has a row that keep growing despite being cut down several times. It's why the squares appeal! Tricia

And with RA, table top gardening might be even more appealing!

I'm not disappointed - your English was so good, I was expecting you to be English or American. I think table tops have a lot of potential for you!
