Slime mold is no longer classified as fungi. Fascinating organisms!

Thanks, Camp, I had no idea slime mold was not considered a fungus.  Maybe the mycelium under the blobs of Dog Vomit Slime Mold doesn't belong to the mold, but some mushroom type which will send up 'shrooms when we get more rain.  I have seen some small, delicate parasol-type mushrooms around the perimeter of the chip pile.  Will be interesting to see what happens in the garden where I've covered the paths with chips from this pile.  Nonna

I just scored a very few goat berries!  My neighbor found that they were all mixed in with gravel, so I'll have to wait for his goats to start doing their business in the grass to get more.

He also has chickens....  My future compost batches should be even better.

And perhaps I can get some free llama beans from the local Llama Lady.  Chicken, llama, goat, and if they decide to dredge our landmark Mirror Pond here in Bend, perhaps a blend of algae and duck doo....  Actually, I have about a tablespoon of the latter in a baggie, just waiting to become compost.  In this neighborhood, there's plenty of wandering wildlife, including the occasional duck or deer.

Together with cardboard, leaves, garden and kitchen waste, shredded paper, crustacean shells, egg shells, coffee grounds and filters, and whatever else I can scrounge, my compost future seems assured.

Do you think I could shred pine needles in an old blender?  The leaf shredder does a poor job of it.

I suppose you could try to blender those up.  Seems like extra work though. Those are not indestructible and will break down if you don't mind waiting.  Or, it might be easier to grab a shovel and chop them on the ground a bit.  That would open up the coating on the needles and allow for decomposition.  Something else I want to mention, you could ask the livestock owners if they have any spent hay or straw for your compost.

Or I could buy a bale, if I can't find any spent straw.

I bought a bale of straw for my chickens and ended up using some of the bale in my compost pile.  By that time it was a year old and was getting moldy.  But I think that even fresh baled straw works well.  I soaked it in water for a minute or so before I used it so it could absorb the water easier than just in a compost pile.

You sound like you have the makings of a great compost pile!
