4x4 SFG cold frame experiment
As an experiment I'm using two nylon hoops crossed and tied in each quadrant of a 4x4 SFG. This SFG is topped with a row cover rated to 24 degrees. The quadrants are separated using crossed 4' boards to minimize loads from snowfalls. Since I'm getting such a late start I will only try kale and hope for a very mild winter. At the very least I will have an early start for Spring.

That's an interesting set-up, one I've not seen before. Cool. Let us know how it works out for you.
I usually don't have to worry about snow, myself. Just lots of rain and wind.

That is a cool set up and I am looking forward to more reports as the season progresses. I would bet you would get good early spinach and onions out of that arrangement as well!.

I really like that set up with the smaller sections of row cover seperated to avoid damage from snow.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. Will post more photos when snow comes. A heavy wet snow will be a good test for this arrangement.

CORRECTION - The hoops aren't nylon, they're 59" fiberglass hoops available at Gardeners Supply.
To answer your question, I'm not an engineer. I recently retired from a career as a software systems manager so I could devote all my time to designing indoor gardening systems.

Are you starting from seed? If so, have you sowed yet? Germination might be tough this time of year but you'll be sure for an early start.
Can you test it out and put a thermometer underneath and record and share the differential pls? I'd be interested to know how the set-up goes.
I'm currently overwintering right now using plastic but interested in a switch to agribon fabric.

I had some very old seeds started indoors and only one came up. New seeds arrived yesterday. Our house is warm so will try starting them next to a cool window. Will move them under grow lights after they germinate. The way things are going I may be moving kale transplants to my cold frame experiment when winter is on the way out.
A thermometer is a great idea. Will look into doing that.

I am a huge fan of manual thermometers that register minimum and maximum temps reached.

I lived in Maryland for 7 years - in Columbia. There was a restaurant in Rockville we used to go to. I don't remember the name, because it was a million years ago. 'Tany rate, I always like to hear from people in Maryland. Massachusetts is Home for me, but I did love my time down South, and have some nostalgic moments.
