I have had a hard time figure out just exactly when the ground is supposed to freeze! I've read to plant garlic 3 weeks before the ground freezes.. but when that is ... not so easy to determine. Can anyone shed any light on that?

Last year, I planted very early in the fall, and had tons of growth before winter ever hit. So I decided I'd wait later this year... it's been so mild, and my ground is no where near frozen.

I also read it was possible to plant garlic in the spring, so I figured, what the heck, it couldn't hurt to try planting it in December.

I planted 77 cloves.

If it grows, I will definately have no vampire issues in my neighborhood.

I still have turnips, chard, cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and one lettuce plant growing in my garden (zone 6e, York County PA) with no special weather protection. Seems kind of bizarre to me.

My garlic planting instruction say that it is ideal to plant after the first hard frost, but it is okay to plant up until November 30. I planted mine on December 4, so you are in good company. Well, at least, company! Razz

My garlic arrived in Sep and the instructions said plant late Sep or in Oct. I waited until early Nov and in spite of some light frosts, I've got a bed full of sprouted garlic. I wish now I had waited till early Dec. We have been having a fairly mild late/fall early winter so far. Lowest temp was 31 Fri night. I love it, but I'm dreading what Jan will bring.

I just planted mine this past weekend - shallots too...

I also am working on a sfg cover / row cover for a 2x12 box and a 4x4 box. No freezes predicted for this week so I planted some carrots, radishes, mache, spinach, and lettuce as well. sunrise is at 7 am and sunset is at 5, so good light is a bit short, but the days should start getting longer here in week and half...

and my garlic growing guide is at work, but I am pretty sure there is no problem with them starting to sprout. Check back with me in the Spring and we'll know for sure!

Boffer assures me the tops will get frost killed, but the bulbs will be ok. I do worry about the cold wind blowing under the tabletop, but the top is under 6"of straw.

Onions in the left two columns; garlic on the right. In the far right rear with the big leaves is a garlic called California Early (and it was).

I planted way too early on 9/29/10. This picture was taken 12/12/10. Everything survived as shown just fine, despite a week of single digit temps in Jan. Some leaf tips got frost bit and turned brown.

Are you kidding?! I still have the knot on my head from the German rolling pin I used to roll out laminate! Any price I would have to pay at the store is cheaper than the consequences of stealing from our kitchen! Wink

The metal framework is from a retail store display rack that I came by somehow. The grid holding the pen and markers is ½ inch hardware cloth.

My garlic is sprouting now that that warmer weather has arrived and looks beautiful. Guess I won't get the final answer until I pull up the bulbs July-ish... but at least none of the green tips have that terrible winter mangled looked like my garlic did last year.
