Snowy hoops
Well, it snowed here night before last. It wasn't cold enough for it to stay around, but they said if it was colder, we would have had a lot of snow. I went out early and found the hoops looking like this-

In the afternoon, I pulled back the plastic to see how the lettuce and spinach were coming along, this is a variety of lettuce and a square of beets.

Here's the spinach and some more lettuce, there's also shallots and red onions on the extreme left side, but you can't see them-

Last night, it got in to the 20's and I see that nothing was hurt in the hoops. I'm really loving this, it has extended my growing season. I was afraid I'd become melancholy when the season ended, but with this way of gardening, I'm still growing things, so no tears were shed when I cut down my tomato plants.

Re: Snowy hoops
The 1/2" binder clips work perfectly. I don't know if this is the cheapest way to do it, but at Walmart, they come in a box of 4 for $1.88. Only draw back is they will eventually rust.
The smaller hoops are 5 ft. long. I decided to try the shorter ones for small veg growth. I think they retain more heat. I know they are warmer than the 4x4 box.

Re: Snowy hoops
I used to work with a guy who had a tomato competition with his mother. They wanted to see who had the first ripe tomato. He always seemed to have a ripe one by the first week in July. I don't remember which variety he grew.
These hoop houses seem easy enough to build. A tool knucklehead such as myself would probably have no problem making them.
