Artichokes?

I'm wondering if it's possible to grow them in square foot gardening. If so, how many per box?

The variety I'd be interested in growing would be a globe. Does it require overwintering?

Also this next question is for FUTURE reference. I live in MI now, but at some point I'd like to go to a more southern area; where the gardening zone is 7,8, or 9.

With the hotter zones (8 or 9) is it possible to grow globe artichokes or are they just not suited for southern climates? By this I mean will they either not grow, struggle to grow, or just die if you try to plant them in a climate that has a gardening zone of 8 or 9 and is in the south.

Also as a vegetable, is artichoke a perennial veggie? If so, what does this mean?

Better to be grown out of a SFG and in the south, though I do know folks who grow them here in the north.
They are tender plants that have a taproot, are heavy feeders and require at least 4 feet between plants.

Thank you for the clarification. You said you'd recommend not growing
them in SFG boxes, but would it be possible to grow them in other forms
of container gardening? I was thinking raised beds, what would the
depth of the boxes have to be?

I understand they are vegetables, but there are tons of catalogs that say they're perennial. Is this referring to the vegetable?

Artichokes require a cold spell to generate the flowers. The flower buds are what we eat. Under natural conditions the cold requirement is achieved by growing them for 2 years. Doing a Google search would give you lots of information about other requirements .
