Okay, I'm sure some of you have experienced this. You walk by a pile of
discarded housewares of one kind or another and think, "Boy, that would
make a great container for a SFG!" Well, we've had construction going
on in the library where I work and for the last couple weeks, there have
been these old light fixture type things sitting outside the library - I
don't know why they haven't been hauled away yet. Anyway, these
fixtures are about 8 inches deep and a few feet long; metal with little
vent-like things on the bottom (or what would have been the top when
they were hanging). They look a little something like this (but think
upside down without the glass part on top):

And
each time I walk out of the building to my car, I see these and think
what great containers they'd make, especially for herbs! I've been
hemming and hawing about taking one or two home.

It reminds me of
that Denis Leary comedy sketch where he's talking about pot and bongs.
He said something like, "Marijuana doesn't lead to other drugs, it
leads to carpentry (making bongs). . . I stopped doing drugs - not
because I didn't like them, but because I didn't want to build
anything!"

I feel like I'm letting myself get out of control - I
mean, I'm only one person, and I've already added a second 4 x 4 bed.
Do I really need another container? Very Happy

Well there is now only one here too but my three 4X12 SFG boxes are still only a small part of my gardening setup. You can’t do too much gardening it gets in the blood it gives purpose and meaning to ones life when all else has failed. It is a fun challenge to have the garden live up to everyones expectations. My friends and neighbors trip out over the wonderful produce they get from my garden. I just harvested squash and got about 25 each of acorn and butternut that stocked my pantry well and pleased another four families. You can’t do too much gardening. I just started doing microgreens in small containers using everything from painted tin cans to coffee or soup mugs for variety and decoration. I now find myself driving around stopping at garage sales and all the goodwill type stores to find my next quaint growing container. I grow something in everything that somehow makes initial sense like rain troughs, garbage cans buckets and pails. Wicking pails are my favorite diversion. If those light fixture covers have drainage then first try growing some radishes or lettuce or smaller greens that produce quickly as a trial effort. Just have fun and don’t look back except to evaluate results.

OMG, jump on it! Seriously, that would make a sweet starter bed.
Better still, grab one that is working, hang it on adjustable chains, over one that you gut, saving only the metal shell and cover for the germination bed.
I'm jealous!

I know JUST what you mean. rofl

Since we had our first cold snap last week, I've been switching over my spring/summer clothes to fall/winter. Due to a lack of closet space, I've been keeping the out-of-season clothes in Sterilite's wheeled underbed storage boxes. (The lids are hinged in the middle.)

The interior dimensions are 36" long x 18" wide x 6" deep. With some 1/4" holes drilled in the bottom for drainage they'll make great, inexpensive, movable containers for next year's garden!!!

I was driving down the interstate yesterday and saw some one had disgarded a metal ladder from the back of their camper. One end was a little twisted. I had to really talk sense to myself not to get off the interstate, turn around, get off again and stop to get that ladder. I was thinking it would make a nice trellis, lol.

I've also been thinking about this- when and what are too much? I have really enjoyed my SFG's this summer. Next year, I'd like to expand to more and different set ups. I decided to continue to take it slow and when it gets where I feel overwhelmed, I know I've reached my limit. I did start an asparagus bed this fall, which should take care of itself pretty much. I also plan on putting in some drip lines in my SFG's set on timers so that I won't have to worry about the watering as much.

I'll let you know if and when I get there!

When you no longer feel this way, you may have reached your limit.

Then you can start planting flowers instead of veggies!

And the worst thing that can happen is that you will end up not using one of your boxes, if you go one box too far. But then again, you can put some perennial herbs in that box and just let them be..... Twisted Evil I use maybe 1% of the thyme I have, but it looks great and needs absolutely 0 attention!

I know what you mean Martha. I have sage, basil and mint growing. I've used it a few times, but mostly, I just love the way it looks and smells. I will say, I used dried basil a few days ago in a dressing and was really sorry I didn't use the fresh stuff. I'm getting more use to fresh than dried herbs. Next year, I plan on having a box devoted to salad and herbs.

Boffer, I do like flowers and planted some this year. They do grow really well in the MM.

The frustrating thing for me is that I use many more herbs for winter cooking (stews, soups, casseroles, etc) than I do for summer cooking (when I don't want to heat up the house)!

I decided to go ahead and take away two of them. I'll just pop by campus tomorrow when it's quiet and I can drive my car down to the loading dock to get them easily. Smile I do think they'll be good for herbs and salads. So I guess my plan now is to make a bit more Mel's mix before it gets cold so it's all ready to go early next spring!
