Walmart deal
Just came back from Walmart. My son and I went over to get some canning jars since the garden is producing so well this year.I saw bagged asparagus roots that were 5 bucks marked down to a dollar.I bought a few 2 weeks ago, planted them and the came up,so I figured I'd get 5 more bags.
When they scanned them, they came up for 2 cents each.I asked if that was right and was told they do that to get rid of them. So,long story short,we got all this for 58 cents.Go check it out if you have a Walmart close by.

Road trip tomorrow! I have GOT to check out the nearest Walmart! Hubby will be watching the race (if not rained out, it IS Watkins Glen...) so I may just have to travel.

Re: Walmart deal
At that price I would make myself need a few more. Sometimes season end sales of bagged starts have mold in them. I usually walk on by those items. Does anybody know for sure if mold on asparagus is a bad thing. It is probably time to poke around for plenty of season end bargains.

Terrific! It must be fate. Ours does not even carry them as they are iffy in this zone. In a couple of years you will have more than you know what to do with, I hope.

We went to a different Walmart last night to see if it was all of them.It is,everything was 2 cents,so we got 4 kinds of strawberries,4 kinds of asparagus, rhubarb, horse radish, and something else(can't remember).100 bags was $2.14.I'm giving a bunch to my brother and 2 Aunts. If it would stop raining I'd start planting ours.

Thanks. If it would stop raining I might go out to the store, but I don't think it's stopping today. I already lost several small peppers and one branch of a tomato plant broke due to the heavy storms overnight!

Walmart deal---not here
Not happening here. They had plastic flowers and tablecloths in that area, too late. Went to Big K on the way home lots of 50-80% off garden items there. Bought a few nice pots for my bringing in efforts and a 4” columbine for .82.

I got mine!
With 2 of my 3 sons afoot, I found the bin tucked away in a corner by the door. I had to dig under a bunch of elephant ear bulbs to find the Jersey hybrid asparagus. I picked up 4 bags with 8 plants each. And a bag of 20 yellow onions and 20 white onions, which thanks to Shannon1, I'll be putting into the spaces between my tomato plants.
I also grabbed five 10-packs of Ever Bearing strawberry roots. Apparently, the 20 strawberry plants I already have are not enough to feed both my family and all the woodland creatures, who prefer to eat them the day before I do! Putting in another 50 plants will hopefully tip the scales in my favor. Either that or it will lead to a chipmunk baby boom!
@Kev, you know how to clean house!
But I'm a bit concerned that the roots might be too dry right now, especially after sitting in a box all summer. Ironically, with all this rain in the forecast, I know I won't get to put them in for days. Any idea on what can be done pre-planting to try to ensure that our "hefty investment" will grow? :?: Should they be wet or moist or just stay dry?

Re: Walmart deal
Checked my Walmart more closely today, and although I DID find a box of bulbs, they were a pretty ornamental rather than any veggies or anything. The box was marked down to $2.50, so I took them over to the scanner and they came up as $1. SO, I'm thinking it must be a NJ deal you guys are finding! I hope you have a lot of fun with your new plants
Let us know how they came out! I'm wondering about the strawberries. This spring, I had to wait a couple of weeks to plant my strawberries, and apparently that was long enough to kill them all. I think maybe two or three of them survived

Re: Walmart deal
Littlesaphire, Are you sure that Kev just didn't get there before you did?
I also picked up some of the ornamentals for $1 each: Lily of the Valley, Clematis, Phlox, and Bleeding Heart. I have a bare border that would benefit from anything.
With the strawberries, (and the rest, too) I figure that the law of averages says that some of them will grow. But, I've tossed away my 2 cents (and a buck or two) on much less before, so I'm keeping my expectations medium to low.
The only thing I'll really be out is the labor to plant'em. But I also figure that as an SFG'er, I've been banking up a lot of labor these last few years. It's about time I made a withdrawal.

Re: Walmart deal
I bought some of the asparagus 2 weeks ago for a buck.I soaked them in water for 15 minutes, then planted and watered heavy and lightly watered everyday. Most of them came up.I've done the same with strawberries.
I gave a bunch away today, but if half of what I planted(and am still planting)comes up,I'll be doing great. The onions looked rotten in the stores I went too,so I didn't get any.So far,I planted around 100 asparagus roots.

Re: Walmart deal
Well my experience with Walmart today at lunchtime was typical and reminded me of why I never go there. I walked in, found the garden section (I'm assuming that's where the seeds and sets were). The place was crowded with inconsiderate people jostling each other and kids running all over the place. I walked all through the garden section and didn't find anything, walked up to a cash register in the garden area that didn't have a line, and waited for a good five minutes while the clerk finished up a private conversation on her cell phone. After she hung up, I asked her about the seeds and she looked at me like I was asking for plutonium and said "I don't work in this area, I don't know." At that point I just gave up and went back to work.
