I added a little, I believe it was, organic composted manure before I planted this year. There were SO many odd random plants growing. All over, even where I hadn't planted anything yet. It was the same plant, but everywhere. Also, how do you prevent things from reseeding from the year before? I had about 8-10 really nice tomato plants growing in the wrong spot that must have grown from seeds. I pulled the plants out at the end of the season but I guess there were too many tomatoes that got mixed into the soil?? AND I have a huge Japanese beetle problem....I'm starting to fear sfg is not for me.

I had the same tomato 'problem' but it ended up being what saved my tomato garden this year. I killed all but 3 of my starts, so out of my 20 plants, 17 are from volunteers from last year. Between that and the peppers that I bought that were OBVIOUSLY mismarked, I am calling it my Mystery Garden.
I had the weed issue from manure this year as well. But, as a 1st year SFG'er, controlling the weeds in my boxes has been so much easier than it was in my plots that for me it is more than an even trade-off. Pull as you find them before they go to seed and the issue will die out as the seed numbers dwindle. As long as those weeds don't have seeds on them, they will make great additions to your compost bin.
Don't give up!

PS - Can't help with the beetle problem - SORRY!

I started 5 new SFG at school and also bought the same brands of compost to add to all my beds at home......and I had lots of weeds in June that came from one of the composts, not sure which one. Thankfully by weeding a lot the first few weeks it is no longer an issue.

There was another thread on Japanese beetles where they talked about traps...
