Post  thecanuck22 7/27/2011, 1:16 pm

hello all, i started this year with sfg. I used all the materials in Mels mix and planted things i know i would eat and one of those things was onions, red ones, I love onions!! Planted some walla walla as well just to see. well the walla wallas got taken down one by one by maggots so the other day i go to pull up a red onion to eat and find some starting into those, i pulled them all up, 2 squares, all but 2 onions had maggot in them Sad Sad

doing some research online about these dastardly devils i find out that they have to overwinter in your garden (or the soil you buy?) in order for the eggs to hatch the next year and produce the maggots. This is my 1st year with this sfg. I bought all my supplies from one place. I posted in an earlier post this year that some of the bags of steer manure i got did not say composted on them, is this the culprit maybe? its the only thing I can think of. I am going to go back to this supplier but would like to have a little more information first.

so, is this odd that a virgin sfg has this problem?

what would you do?

Thanks for taking the time to read and hopefully respond.
