Honey-crisp apples, Apricots, Yams, etc in "7B W.Wa" ? :)

Having looked in this PNWforum, & not finding previous discussions re
other 7B W.Washingtonians growing these foods,
I come here to ask about:
How well do you grow here: Honey-crisp-apples?, & Asian pears?
How well do you grow here: Apricots?
How well do you grow here: Sweet potatoes?
How well do you grow here: Yams? - and 100 other yummies Very Happy

and
What contraptions have you build, for
growing DEEP-rooted plants, such as Blueberries, Raspberries, etc.

For experience with these you might have, I thank you! Smile

I am not in the PNW, but everything I have read about growing either yams or sweet potatoes says that they need a very long growing season, and they need consistently warm soil (one source even said that yams are basically a tropical plant and be realistic as to your growing conditions!)

Honeycrisp apples are the opposite - they don't mind the winters here in South Dakota! They are Zone 3-6. I can't remember what zones cover the PNW, but if you are on the colder side, they may do just fine - they were developed at the University of MN.

Glad you got the link to WSU extension service. I hope it will be as helpful for you as the OR Extension Service is for me.

Each area is so different that here in Oregon, we have four regions that do not relate to Hardiness Zones at all, including: Coastal, Western Valleys, High Elevations and The Columbia and Snake River Valleys. Regardless of your Hardiness Zone, certain crops do better in different regions.

I am a zone 9, (not too cold during the winter) but because of our cool and damp summer climate, certain crops are not suitable, such as melons, eggplant, sweet potatoes and okra that require warm long growing seasons. However, I can grow sugar snap peas and lettuce most all summer long.

That does not mean I won't try sweet potatoes and eggplant, in fact I have both going in my SFG now.

Here's wishing you a great garden and success with the veggies that you want to grow.

In reading my OP over again, I notice - All of them are FRUITS (not veggies); &
too I asked for "contraptions" to grow them in.

(2nd. to previous owner's neglect, the pie-cherry, & peach-tree died), and
not having the luxury of having a 'walk-in Shocked

Freezer' for necessary cold-snaps,
maybe needed for some FRUITS;
but
by planting Honeycrisp-apples, Apricots, Sweet potatoes, Yams,
Blueberries, Raspberries etc - in their own individual containers, the kind of success you too wish for us, should be possible. Thank you. And I wish you Success too Very Happy
