That's how I eat them too nKedrOoStEr. I grow regular size the Early White Vienna's, for quick and yummy. The Kossack Hybrid if you want very big and not woody.

Here is a kohlrabi I grew this year (can you find the caterpillar?):

I want to understand PERFECTLY by your definition:

Pefectly. I'd rather thought of being an idiot by asking a stupid question than doing a stupid, idiotic mistake that could have been prevented by asking a stupid question.

Pickled kohlrabi? Bet it would be similar to kimchi.

What's the difference between kohl rabi and broccoli rabi?

My warm crops are doing so poorly that I probably won't have anything to pickle. Dilly kohlorabi anyone?! Very Happy

I'm getting ready to start some kohlrabi for the first time Very Happy. Our spring time weather can be so goofy around here, my plan is to do a batch of seeds today, and then another in about 10 days or so. That will be my rookie strategy anyways. We got a bunch of kohlrabi free in the fall at the food pantry I help run. First time I ever heard of it. I went online to find recipes to hand out with it. Good thing because only about a quarter of our clients had ever heard of it either. The few that did were all eager to get some - though it wasn't very fresh and some was a little bit large - so I don't know how good it was. A lot of the other clients were happy to try it, too.

Harry Bosco wrote:I want to understand PERFECTLY by your definition:

You can seed directly or transplant.

I just start a bunch in flats. Once they break through the soil put them outside in full shade. This is so they don't get roasted and so they don't get too big in the flats. Then prick them out and plant them whenever I want.

This year I plan to transplant a few out of the flats every week or so. To stagger the harvest. I like eating them when I need some refreshment at the garden so there will always be some there to pick at different stages of being ready. I've picked and ate them at all different sizes.

I would like to try this but am concerned about the worm issue. Have never grown cabbage nor am I a fan of it. If we cover it in tulle or cheesecloth for the worms, how does it pollinate? I have no clue where I'd find local seeds right now, but would be willing to give it a try. BTW, it adds a nice flavor if you dice it and add it to your chicken or vegetable soup!

You never have to pollinate Brassica's. As we aren't eating their seeds. I like kohlrabi's because if there is a cabbage worm on it I can see it and kill it. On a cabbage if it gets under the folds I don't see it. No folds on a kohlrabi to hide under.

Most of the dollar stores around me have left over Early White Vienna kohlrabi seeds. Will probably set you back about 18 cents ;-).

I can send you some if you want. Just msg me address if you want some.

Thank you for the answer and for the offer. There is one of the dollar stores in the next town. I forget exactly which line it is but I will check them out today and only accept your offer if they do not have it as I would really like to try these.

BTW, if anyone is curious and does want to store them, they do store for an extremely long time. Even if you prefer them brand spanking new out of the garden, I think they would still be a fine addition to your soup at a later stage. Mine from the CSA stored for at least a month in one of those green bags.
