I bought a plant marked as brussel sprouts and planted it over Memorial Day weekend. We just came back from a 10 day vacation to this picture. It's rather bulby, so I was wondering if this is kohlrabi? Above each leaf stem a small sprout is forming.

I've never seen either plant growing, so can only go off pics from books and online.

Thanks. Is this a brussel sprout plant? Dsc_0210

if you have a small sprout forming above each leaf, that sure sounds like brussels sprouts to me!

I have a wild mishmash of brassicas growing in my bed... I got the seedlings free because they weren't marked as to what they were. So far I've identified several cabbages, and I think a couple of broccoli... but I won't know for sure until they get a little bigger, lol!

Does this help? Its Brussels sprouts. And yes, little knobs form at the base of the leaves which are the sprouts, usually from the bottom up.

Just Me,

That looks suspiciously like a kohlrabi as the base of the stem is swollen just above the ground.

Looks like there is no stem above the swollen knob, just leaves coming out of the bulb.

What a taste treat you have in store for you. Be sure to harvest it before it gets bigger than 3 inches across.

My one and only kohlrabi is in the Grow UR Grub children's bed of our community garden and they get to eat it, not me:( Just found seeds so I am planting some for this fall.

I see what you're seeing, but I think the give away from Justme is 'Above each leaf stem a small sprout is forming.'

Here's a closer look at what is forming above each leaf stem. Excuse the asparagus frond and the lettuce leaf.

Thanks for your pics Boffer and Quiltbea. The pics I've seen of brussel sprouts
are usually when they're ready to harvest or already harvested.

I've been waiting for a stalk to appear. Brussel sprouts grow very differently than I thought. I thought it would be like a broccoli or cauliflower plant with one stalk in the middle.

So if this is brussel sprouts, could it just be growing in a short/round base? If so, was lack of light or water that made it form that way?

The nursery label just said Brussel Sprout, so no cute variety name or anything else to go by.

Hey, maybe Justme has a plant that has crossed a kohlrabi and a brussel sprouts - a kohlrabi sprouts or a brussel rabi? I'd want to plant them - two for one! Laughing

Boffer - I'm guessing this means kohlrabi doesn't have little buds or sprouts above each leaf stem.

So do I harvest it now? The bulb is about 3" across. Should I wait to see what it does?

So I shot a pic of a smaller BS plant.

I still go with kohlrabi even with the buds; maybe Sherryeo is right!

I let all my kohlrabi get over three inches; then I peeled the woody skin off. The insides were nice and crispy and no woodyness.

JustMe, I think I'd just have to let it grow for a while - at least till I saw what those buds/nubs are going to be!!! Keep us informed - I think we're all intrigued to see what might happen! bounce

Mine look like Boffers. The Brussels are long and leggy this season, I think it was from high nitrogen. Any way I an going to put in some other transplants this week and hope for more compact growth. As to the original post, I think it's kohlrabi.

Is this a brussel sprout plant? Empty Harvested the brusselrabi/kohlsprout today

Post  JustMe 7/26/2011, 10:35 pm

The sprouts above each leaf stem started to shoot out another set of
little leaves, so I opted to harvest the mystery plant today. It took a bit of digging and had a woody root.

It had about 1/4" of woodiness to it, particularly on the bottom. We've only eaten kohlrabi through our CSA, and it reminds us of broccoli stalks in texture.

We ate it raw with ranch dressing. The texture of this plant was like that of a broccoli stalk but it had a kick like radish. Are there varieties of kohlrabi that are spicy?

I cut the pieces smaller, but the heat just accumulated in our mouths. So I steamed the larger pieces, which we have done w/kohlrabi, but then it was hot in both temperature and taste.

DH politely asked if we could compost it. The kids had a few bites but they find radishes to be hot, so they found this to be too hot. I munched away on the raw matchstick and finger sized portions as well as the finger sized steamed portions, knowing I was eating what could be a once in my lifetime vegetable. lol

I am determined to grow brussel sprouts next year. I'd like to head back to the nursery just to let know that the plant was not what it was supposed to be.

This made me laugh. One of the things that I love about gardeners (and their unwitting families) is the apparent willingness to pull something mysterious out of the ground, ask strangers on the internet what they think it is, and without a definitive answer, eat it.

Nobody else does that.
