I've got about eight empty squares scattered throughout my various beds, where I've harvested or pulled up things that failed. I'd love to plant some things but it's the hottest part of summer here. What can be planted now?

Hey! I was just looking this up a little while ago! I talked with a friend yesterday and he planted squash, corn, and okra a few weeks ago and it's doing well. I also saw that in our extension info we do still have time to put that in as well as corn. We don't usually get a good frost until the end of Oct or even Dec. I just finished putting in 2 whole rows of squash to hopefully have some for freezing.

Being in GA, you figure to have a good bit more growing season, yes? That being the case, you could easily plant bush beans and/or swiss chard. Depending on how much growing season, you may get okra, cucumbers, zucchini, or some more squash...provided you have the space to give or the vertical supports to lift the viners.

I'm sure there are more options that are escaping me at the moment.

I think I might try the okra, and some more beans, definitely. I'm having no luck with corn, it is in fact one of the things I pulled up today, having produced a lot of little tiny ears than never ripened. You think squash and zucchini will grow fast enough? We probably have another 3 months of growing season before even a possibility of frost.

Dunno, honestly. Haven't researched zukes or squash. Someone here can tell you, though.

Corn requires LOTS of plants from what I've been told. You need a lot of them to properly pollinate themselves. If not, you have to hand pollinate them. And, I think even then they are a crapshoot. I had someone tell me that unless you can plant 40 plants with proper spacing, don't expect much. I planted 40 in two separate areas of my yard and got a horrible crop. It's just not "low maintanence" enough for my SFG style to overcome the "4/$1" I can find in the stores this time of year, personally.
