I'm not quite sure what to make of this!

In the autumn I planted garlic cloves (just ones from the supermarket) and I had them under a coldframe all winter.
The green tops were mostly just one shoot from each clove, but some sent up several shoots. The green growth did very little after an enthusiastic start, and in the last week it shrivelled away to nothing so I decided to dig up my crop...
Here it is

Each clove seems to have made one garlic-onion if I can call it that, it isn't made up of cloves.
Anyone know what happened? The cloves which had a few green shoots turned out to be small clumps of these things.
I will certainly try again next year but I'm wondering how I can make it behave properly.

I am curious what are your coldest sustained temperatures where you live? Perhaps what we see here is a result of a variety that grows best in warmer temperatures struggling to make it in the colder environment... Perhaps you need a variety more adapted for colder climates. This is pure speculation on my part. Very Happy

Hi
You may be right but I will never know probably.

One garden shop does stock garlic cloves but only in the spring, and very very expensive (16 dollars for about 9 individual cloves). I bought them once and half were already rotten and the rest did nothing in the garden. so unless I buy seed (life is too short for that) I have no idea of where the stuff grew.

So this time I used one bulb from a supermarket (marked origin China) and one from an organic shop (origin unknown).

I did a bit of Googling and saw that the cloves should swell before dividing, looks like mine did the first bit only.

I had them in the same bed as my strawberry plants, which I cover for the winter (otherwise they don't flower until really late and in a bad year a lot die-off). Looks like it was a mistake to put the garlic in there too. I'll give it another go next year and leave them in the open. Some people seem to say that you can plant these single bulbs and they will divide and make normal bulbs.

Hmm, the shops sell single-bulbed garlic from China, perhaps I'll sow some of those too and see what they do?

Someone tried planting at different times and the cold is needed http://toads.wordpress.com/2007/08/05/when-to-plant-your-garlic/

Right, plan for autumn, two squares with some new garlic cloves, some of my single bulbs, and some of bought single bulbs. All left to fight it out over the winter and then protected a bit if they have any green bits to protect. Ooh, I do like a plan.

Thanks!

I haven't had much luck with garlic either... Only just been eating fresh shoots from old cloves that have started sprouting...

But maybe I can point you in the right direction for help...

Check out this guy's channel. There should be pretty many posts with garlic... Anyway he has been helpful to me with a lot of stuff about growing in our northern climates...

Hope you figure it out before you spend a fortune, heh...
