Happy FIRST EGG Day!!!
We got our first egg this morning. I went to let the girls out around 9:30 this morning and take a peek in the nest box. I lifted the lid and there it was, a tiny little first egg!! I was so excited I had to go wake up Grayson, one of my 4 year olds. I let him find the egg for himself.

My supplier of organic eggs calls those practice eggs. Are your hens normal size?
I would love to have a few hens but so far our city does not allow them. The subject is brought up every few years.
Can I plant eggplants instead?

Us too!
We have one layer that's been going steady all summer, but one of our chicks laid her first egg today. It was so tiny and cute. I suspect the other 2 chicks will be laying pretty soon too. Which reminds me...we don't have much time to figure out what to do with all these eggs we're soon to be having (4 hens).

TN- So it is a Happy Egg day!! I have 5 girls so I bet we'll have more than enough eggs. Omelets and Quiche all around!
Kelejan- I have 3 big chickens and 2 bantams (1 of which is a runt!) I wish everyone could have chickens. They are so much fun!

Aub, I celebrate with you!!! Ours should be laying in mid October, just in time for my birthday. We have 24 so we plan on selling eggs.

Very exciting! Congrats! Any idea why it's all dimpled like that?

Congrats on your first egg!!
We got 2 chicks March 3 and they finally started laying about 10 days ago. I'm only getting one egg a day so I'm not sure if only one chicken is laying or if they are just alternating. My eggs are also small, is this because they just starting??

Re: Happy FIRST EGG Day!!!
Yes, Robin, that is why the eggs are small. As the hens get more mature their eggs get larger. Funny how I thought of Robin's egg when I first read your post. lol
to the Forum. How long have you been an SFGer?

Re: Happy FIRST EGG Day!!!
thanks for such a quick reply. It's nice to know the eggs will be getting to be a bit larger. I didn't want my chickens to feel inadequate or anything. They're such good girls....

My Girl's first egg
Just before Easter my one chicken, Juanita started laying eggs. Shortly after, her sister Chickita joined in and now I have a third sister with us, Lolita and she is laying the biggest eggs so far. My chickens are Silkie bantams. Love these girls and they are lots of fun.

What size are your eggs? I have 2 silkies and I wondered if their eggs would be very big.

Hi Aub
The eggs are smaller and a light tan in color. I love their little eggs....remember they are smaller than the average regular size chicken.

LOVE your chickens names, makes me want to start dancing around the house to some type of flamingo style thingy.
