My cucumbers have suddenly taken off. However, they are so large I am wishing I had only planted one per square instead of two. Were they supposed to be pruned down to one stem like the tomatoes? The stems look like a tangled mess at the bottom. Sorry-3rd Newbie Question-Cucumbers Cucumb12

I would leave them be & train them to grow up on a trellis--mulch at the bottom to maintain moisture and not dry out.
Note: cucumbers are water hogs--My one plant requires a lot of water, so I can only imagine having two side-by-side.

Mels book does say we can place X2 per square, it's a vine growing plant so therefore it can be trained to go up.

By the looks of the pic' you provided...looks like you are training them to go up...I'd say you'll be fine.

When I plant cukes 2 to a square, I plant the seeds in opposite corners to give each plant a bit more room. What variety of cukes do you have there? They look pretty darn happy! What a Face

Trellis Up!!! I was just out admiring my cucumbers. Because I needed a lot for canning, mine are in the row garden but planted along a cattle panel to trellis them up. I have two 15 foot long panels planted. I plant them REALLY close...every few inches, and they are flourishing. I waited until the plants were about 18 inches and then I wove them once into the cattle panel. Some are already 4 feet tall and I have hundreds of flowers on the plants.
