Purple Boxes in the Trees?
So last week when I was driving through Vermont I spied 3 of these things hanging in trees in separate towns. I was a bit mystified, but today I found out what they are!

Boxes
I remember seeing these spread throughout the Adirondacks in the Keene Valley region. Insects can be so darn destructive!

Re: Purple Boxes in the Trees?
Emerald Ash Borer traps. They're all over here in western NY They're really destroying a lot here, I'm sad to say.
Re: Purple Boxes in the Trees?
Yup..Iowa only has them on an island in the middle of the Mississippi right now...We have traps up everywhere for early detections. If you have ash trees they figure maybe 5% of them will live through the invasion.
Edited to say that is one estimate. Other officials may say different.

Re: Purple Boxes in the Trees?
Thats as ironic as could be. Today for the first time I saw one of those traps here in town we are the next county SW from Alamakee where they have first been found in this state. Since they are on land in SE Minnesota it’s just a matter of time. There are firewood moving ban warnings being explained daily on radio and tv here. This is very sad and scary because it seems like some new foreign insect, fish, fowl, plant or animal constantly shows up to help us and ends up doing much costly harm instead. I guess that shows the lobby power of commercial interest (no politics intended just fact). Here is a video from ISU extension about the emerald ash borer and when it’s over one about the Japanese beetle is in the queue to view. http://www.extension.iastate.edu/pme/emeraldashborer.html

Re: Purple Boxes in the Trees?
The problem is...some people don't care about a ban. They will even hide the wood in the trunk so it can't be seen by law enforcement. They feel it is their right to do as they want. The better for everyone does not come into it. Eventually it will spread throughout the US but would be a lot slower if it didn't have the human help!
