Taut or loose Trellis? Empty Taut or loose Trellis?

Post  Inca Heat 6/24/2011, 11:45 pm

Last year I put my trellis up and left it somewhat loose to facilitate me learning how to weave plants without damaging them. This year i decided to make them taut and tight, but I guess I need to lighten up a bit, not much give on them, and I broke a piece of one of my tomato plants =(

Which way do you guys like better?

There is a thread on this already somewhere... the overall consensus was tight not loose. :o)

EDIT: https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t7264-tension-of-trellis-net-does-it-matter

I did what buttafly did and it works great so far (I'm a newbie)

Thanks for posting. I was wondering the same thing. Tied ours on as tight as we could, but it still dips in the middle. (Horizontal layers of trellis for the tomatoes to grow up through.) We'll see how it does.

My trellis "netting" is made of metal concrete reinforcement material. So, it's tight. I haven't had an issue yet with bending/breaking plants. Just be gentle, as you are finding out. I imagine you want things tight to support the weight. You don't want the netting to sag under all the pressure of the plants.
