The heat in hot peppers comes when they change to their final color, not while they are still green. Hot peppers get hotter and sweet peppers get sweeter in color.

I don't know. I think my bell pepper is doing fine, but I'm not too happy with how my hot banana pepper looks. Is it possible for a pepper to get too much sun? Seems like it's suffering from the heat - most of the baby peppers just aren't really growing any. Only one is making any real progress. I'll take a picture later today and post it to see what people think.

I came in here looking for help with my peppers... seems I'm not the only one with less than vigorous pepper plants! My bell peppers are okay, dark green and producing baby bell peppers. My jalapeno and other hot peppers are pale, stunted and not flowering. Well, one jalapeno had produced one itsy-bitsy pepper. I'm babying that one. LOL They got a drink of MG this morning. I don't think it's my MM... everything else all around the pepper plants is growing like gangbusters.

Patience + more patience.

Just so so here thus far. Most are clearly lagging. First it was too cold then suddenly heat stroke seems to be bothering them. Have had a few bells but the skins are thin yet. As usual have close to 40 plants so there are enough to freeze lots of stuffed peppers and freeze some Jalapeno poppers too. I will argue that my hot peppers are just as hot at all stages of growth. Maybe next year will try a few in SFG boxes built 2’ by 12’ just for them and some built that size for tom’s too as my initial experiment in main crops in the SFG.

Here are a couple photos. I apologize for the angle and quality, but it's hard to get these photos with a camera phone! Smile

One really nice looking flower, but there aren't a lot of new flowers, and the peppers aren't really growing (with the exception of one lower down on the stem you can't see here).
How are everybody's peppers growing this year? - Page 2 Sfg07110

You can see right in the middle of this picture a couple of the peppers whose flowers have fallen off. The stems are yellowish, and the peppers haven't really grown. I believe camprn suggested they didn't get pollinated.

Here's a nicely growing bell pepper though.

So like others have stated, I doubt it's the MM since everything else is doing well and being watered the same amount. Could it just be it's getting too much sun? I thought peppers were a hot weather, hot climate plant. Hmm...

Post  moswell 7/12/2011, 12:09 pm

On the upside, earlier this season I fried a banana pepper plant nearly to a crisp with a homemade aphid spray. I pulled it out of the garden, but out of sheer laziness I never threw it out - I just tossed it in an extra pot I had near the garden that had some potting soil in it. Literally tossed it, didn't try and plant it or anything. The other day, I noticed a couple open flowers on it! So I planted it back in the sfg yesterday (I have a couple free squares since I harvested my shallots), and today I've got a couple peppers on that one too. One looks like most of the peppers on the other plant (I suspect it's going to fall off soon - the stem is all yellow); one actually looks like it grew a bit overnight. So maybe I'll get two whole banana peppers this year.

I have mostly blossoms on all my peppers plants but on the Sweet Banana, the single pepper is growing well.

It's almost yellow like a banana and has been since the beginning so I guess this is one that does NOT start out green. I hope the other blossoms start to grow soon.

Most other things have done well this year, but my peppers just don't seem to have changed hardly at all. They are still about 8 inches tall with nothing flowering. Any ideas?

Anyone else seeing anything strange this year?

For some reason mine seem to start off well but then there is a brown wilting on the bottom of ALL my different peppers. Cannot understand why this is happenning and will watch the rest of them as I love hot peppers but also planted some red and yellow peppers as well.

Any ideas?????? How are everybody's peppers growing this year? - Page 2 601593

I'm having great success. It started off slow but now my plants are full throttle. I have eaten two banana peppers, one red bell, two green bell. And now the plants have multiple peppers growing. Very happy.

Perhaps I should be a little more patient as I planted mine in early June and I live in Pa. and the weather is not as hot as you have down south. But am still watching the mold that seems to have gotten on the bottom of my first batch.

FLoyd, you might want to check you soil's ph.

But, if your peppers are getting brown at the bottoms, it may be blossom end rot. They may need a shot of calcium. Try adding a tbs. of powdered milk to the MM around the outside of the roots of each plant. It also won't hurt to add 1 tbs of epsom salts to each square. Then wate this in well. If it's mold as you posted in your second post, all I can think is you have a drainage problem. If you have been having too much rain, you might also consider adding a scoup of compost in a week or so after the milk/epsom salt treatment.

How about dairy creamer vs powdered milk?

Dairy creamer would have to be real dairy. Your wanting to get some calcium in the soil fast. You can use crushed egg shells, but that takes longer to break down to calcium. You can use bone meal or a commercially prepared fertilizer that has calcium in it. The epsom salts provides magnesium that helps with the absorption of the calcium and reduces stress on the plants. I've found powdered milk works well and is pretty cheap.

I picked a sack load of Poblanos this morning. I felt if the stotm were to hit the plant would far better without all the weight of the fruit. I put them in a paper bag to let them finish ripening. Ah, summer on the southern coast.

I came home from a week at camp to find my jalapenos had died. Not failing... failed. DH and DS were both sheepish... thought they'd done something to make them die. No... the bell peppers are gorgeous; dark green and peppers are healthy. Oh well, can't be successful all the time! The tomatoes and cukes... the pea pods.... the herbs... the broccoli.. the lettuces... all healthy and producing!!

I had a neighbor stop by while I was out seeing what had grown while I was away. She was STUNNED by the difference between my gardens and hers. She wanted to know what kind of soil I was using. I said, "No soil, no dirt." And then explained MM to her. DH said later, "You enjoy saying that, don't you? The 'no dirt' thing?" Heh heh heh... ya, you could say that. Wink

I have tiny babies on 4 of my 5 plants, and the one that has 3 full-size peppers just waiting to be picked is the Golden Bell that is NOT a bell! Figures the mystery pepper would be the quickest producer!
